Pressure test.

I assume there is a special tool for this????

Should I worry even if the broken part was very small and at the bottom (obviously)? It wasn't near the gear case. It only broke off a couple inches if that.

Do a search on here. You can make one yourself. The only problem is getting the fitting to screw into the drive.

If its only a couple inches you won't even notice it.

If he just welded down on the bottom of the skeg, then your seals should be fine, not worry about it. Fill small pits or cracks in skeg with JB Weld Quick, sets up in 4 minutes, let dry, file it down, touch up paint, no problem. Buy JB Weld at Advance Auto or similar. Advance Auto has a Silver/Blue Metallic spray paint that is a very close match for the Yamaha color, I use it to touch up scratches on my motor. Good Luck!

Sounds like the guy didn't know how to weld well which actually works in your favor since it sounds like he doesn't get very good penetration and hence not enough heat anyway to prevent the booger welds he did on your fin. Have a picture?

Maybe the guy used that "wonder rod" from the huckster at the flea market.

You know, the guy that can weld anything metal together, even soda cans.

Those are the type of welds that are "fat & ugly".

I see the siliconed bunks come up pretty frequently with aluminum hulls. Is it safe for glass boats too? I'm trying to decrease friction without going to the screw on slick pads.

As normal for many threads--this one has vered to the left-So I'll add to the damage--No weld (no matter what type material) is a "good" weld without beveling to the center before welding. And NO grinding it level won't weaken it then.Butt joint welds require some type of backing plate in order to hold-up.That's my 2cents on welding.:D

I hope so-I plan on spraying my bunks with it.Last time I went to do a splash test-the ramp was lonnnggg and shallow,I was in up to the tailpipe and still had to push that boy off by hand--not pretty to say the least.:mad:But like they said--be careful till you get used to it,metal boat may shoot off the trailer like a race horse!
