Simple outdrive wiring question

Hello,

Last week my 1976 140 Mercruiser MC-1 trim/tilt would not go up!! I replaced the up solonide and it still would not go up. I discovered the blue wire near the pump had become disconnected so I re- connected it and now it goes up no problem.

While I was messing around in the stern area, I noticed the two wires feeding through the transom into the out drive were not both connected. I believe the black wire was connected but the other one (I think it was blue) was not connected to anything.

I believe those wires are connected to the trim indicator on the instrument panel since they seem to be the only wires coming from the outdrive.

Would it be best for me to start at the trim/tilt indicator instrument and follow the wires right back to the stern so that I can figure out where the break is?

Could the trim/tilt outdtive wire been originally connected to the blue wire that is used to raise the LU??

Thanks again for any help!!

Those wires could be from the Trim Limit switch on the drive.
The older drives had a Trim Limit switch on the drive which is not really fixable and were often bypassed when they broke.
If you trace the gauge wires to the stern you might find they connect to a contraption on the inside of the transom.
I don't know what year they made the change.

Found this schematic in another members post that shows the wiring.

Thank you both for the information. I have a confession to make. This wiring question pertains to a 1978 165 Mercruiser Starcraft American 20. This particular trim/tilt system has a double solenoid system. The confusion comes from a project Mirrocraft 76' 140 Iron Duke I just picked up which has numerous motor and trim/tilt ailments. These ailments keep swirling in the back of my mind which leads to question fatigue on my part.

I will track down those wires and see what may be disconnected in the stern area. The questions for the Mirrocraft will be forthcoming after I work out these last few wiring issues in the American 20". BTW the Sea Nymph restoration looks awesome!!

The world would be a perfect place if we all could spend our waking hours completing similar restoration projects for the benefit of others!!

Thanks again
