But so does hull design. A question for the wise and omnipotent Starmada, one fraught with the risk of vast conflict of opinion:

If you were choosing one SC to handle lakes of all sizes, which hull and size would it be? I want to fish the smaller lakes here in Idaho, but also be comfortable on several of our bigger lakes. Pend Oreille, for example, can get ugly in a hurry if the wind turns wrong--and it often does. At the same time, some of our smaller lakes and fishing situations may not be able to handle the draft of a 21' or 22' deep V.

I realize the answer is two SCs, but let's imagine the need to keep the fleet small at the moment. This is primarily a fishing boat, but taking the Admiral and the pups (our furry children) out for a cruise once in a while.

Give up and give in now, it'll be a lot easier for you in the long run. Accept the fact that you will need multiple boats. You have serious issues just like the rest of us:facepalm::der::twitch::tinfoil3:

Jason, At one point shortly after I returned from Afghanistan, the Admiral and I were up to 10 recumbent bikes and 2 MTBs. Currently, we have 7 dogs. I am almost certain that MBS is in my future!

W/ the somewhat limited availability of scarce tin in the NW, may have to take what you can find 'for now' that'll mostly fit your needs, just to get the project into the hanger soon.

Then during teardown & rehab, keep an eye out for 'the one' ;)

AKA: the Jasoutside boat building philosophy ^^^

'Only' took Jason Dec 2009 +/- til Dec 2013 & 6 or 7 rigs* to land his white whale........

*not including donors

Best of luck in your search..

JB, road trips are common for me, and another BL offered the use of his Peterbilt and 46ft trailer to make a trip East looking for tin. Shouldn't take all that long :)

Well then, come on out to the northern midwest, they seem to have quite a stockpile of tin..........

Perhaps Jas could even help out as a old Tin picker, get his own show on the History channel.........

I was actually thinking of trying to commission Jason, but I am not sure having an addict look for more of his addiction is helpful

I hear rumor that Jas' Admiral, Jen, has a wicked mean frying pan arm so it could be hazardous to your own health :fish:

I tell ya, I am pretty darn sure that my MBS is cured, seriously. I know you guys might not believe me, with good reason not too! But, yah, I think I'm all good here:becky:

I ALWAYS have an eye out for a good metal boat in my neck of the wood. If I see something, I'll surely post up on the clist thread:thumb:

I am fortunate that Elizabeth (the Admiral) has no frying pan, so long as she can get new quilting material and sewing machines with the same freedom that I have for bicycles, guns and now...boats :)

Re: Size matters

to answer your original Q, one of the 18-19' hulls with an outboard. with motor trimmed up, won't draw significantly more than a 16'er but has WAY higher sides and way more room for spouse and K9s. which one, depends on your plans for the boat (or, in your case, maybe on what's available....altho i understand that Peterbilt option does open up the possibilities somewhat...and no need to worry abt whether the trailer will make it home!)

Re: Size matters

21' Mariner with a 90 and a 7.5 kicker has 10" of draft. But a closed bow may be best for bad weather situations.

Re: Size matters

Been looking at 18-21'. At 18', one boat, properly laid out, would likely work. At 21', more likely to need something small for some of the small water around here.

Now...about those 18' Holiday fishing set-ups...

Simple answer either and 18' Holiday, or an 18ss with a snap on bow cover.

After running 16', 18' and 20' SS's and now an 18'Holiday all I/O except the 16. I'm all in on the 18 Holiday I/O, for room layout and the way they handle on both small and large water. Quite a few will say the I/O dog house takes up to much room, 90% of the time that is where the Admiral and I sit back to back fishing, so it is by no means wasted space.

I am totally with Glen on this too ^^^^^.

Take a look at pretty much any of the OB's and you'll see a gigantic splash well hogging up a ton of space at the stern. While I haven't measured, I'd bet a box of doughnuts those splashwell's take more square footage than a dog house. Plus, like my buddy mentioned, it makes for a nice spot to sit and set stuff, ya know.

Did we just start an IO v. OB debate here????:embarassed:

Well, we all know who wins that one:becky:

I'm actually a little ambivalent on the debate at the moment. I know so little about either system that it will all be a learning curve. If I can teach myself automotive engines, I should be able to figure out the marine side. I let an 18' IO/OB Holiday go yesterday. Seemed to be a good deal, but I couldn't get over the passes to Seattle to take a look. Still trying to work on that 20' Holiday, and mulling over the 21' I posted in another thread (both outboards). All depends on price and timing.

The Taj Ma-boatshed is going to be superinsulated, so even without heating, it should keep an inboard safe for regular use in the winter :)

Trying to read the Islander megathread...may take a couple of days

Glen, First of all, I'm very glad you are able to reply :) I was hoping to hear from you, as I know you are fan of the IO/OB, and I know you fish from one regularly. Thanks for the inputs!

Re: Size matters

Just my two cents but I use my 18' Holiday both in open ocean and in the local rivers to fish bass and trout, a little more challenging to launch in the river (our rivers aren't very grand) but she gets the job done and loads of footroom ( and yes an outboard)
