Hi All,

Firstly thanks for any advice that is given.....

As thread title suggests I've got a bayliner bowrider 2006 175 with a small leak. Today when I got home from the lake I put two buckets of water in the bilge and waited, it extremely slowly drips from around the bung housing.

Should I just remove the 3 screws and brass bung housing fitting clean up the fiberglass and the brass and put some silicon on it and put it back on and see if that works? What sealant should I use? Also should I have some plumbers tape or anything on the threads of the bung? I dont think this is where it's leaking from but it has none and no o-ring and I dont see metal on metal providing a very good seal...

Thanks again,

yes remove the 3 screws pull unit and reseal with 3m 4200 or 5200.

Agreed.

But if this were mine, I would first make sure that the three screws will tighten in their current locations. On mine, the water intrusion made the screw holes unreliable, and I had to rotate the garboard fitting and drill three new screw holes.

Your picture suggests that someone has already tried to reseal the garboard fitting. The proper sealant would be 3M 5200, and only after you have given the area some time to dry out after removing the fitting.

What usually causes these to fail is overtightening the plug and breaking the transom seal. I know now that this is what did mine in.... This is a pipe thread, and only needs to be finger tight, and about another 1/8th to 1/4 turn to seal. No tape, or gunk, is needed.

Happy boating!

Ok so I dont need to crank up the bung torque wise to get it to seal :)

Thanks for the info.

Just checked and 2 of the three screws were a tiny bit loose.

Its raining atm will wait and see what happens when I pour some water in and see if that fixed it

I didn't mean to suggest that you didn't need to do a reseal on the fitting, but to make sure that you could still use the existing screw holes. I would recommend that you properly seal the fitting, and take that worry off of your mind!

Happy boating!
