Reminds me of the BMW Isetta from the 50s.

Re: Smart Car

My son put a down payment on one, drove one, got his down payment back. He said the car was kind of cool but the shifting really sucked. I guess they have a paddle shifter.

Re: Smart Car

For the money performance is lacking. Shifting is horrible according to the reports. The only thing you are getting is something unique. I'll pass.

Re: Smart Car

The car has passed all US safety requirements and gets a bazillion miles per gallon.

It is not an Interstate cruiser, it is a commuter and city car.

The Europeans have been dealing with $5 and up gas for a while. They seem to know things that we are only now waking up to.

Well

I really thought they world be in the 50 MPG range

But It only gets 40 MPG AND there allready driving them HERE on the Interstate which is were i saw the first one in traffic at 70 MPH

Compared to my past rabit diesel pickup at 49 MPG and GEO metro gas at 49 MPG with dual airbags and AC i thought there would be more progress

Re: Smart Car

They have diesel-electric hybrid version being tested in Germany that gets 75-80 mpg.

Re: Smart Car

If I lived in a big city where I didn't have to do much if any freeway driving, I would totally get one. But not if I have to spend two hours in everyone's blindspot on the interstate each day.

I think it looks cool anyway. I am tempted to get one just to run errands with near home.

Yeah I have to wonder what the big difference is that the european version gets more than 10mpg better mileage.

I think it's a Stupid Car myself. If something like that showed up on the roads around here someone would think the space aliens were invading and start shooting.
