As some may have read, I was very impressed with how the installation of the smart tabs made my Cobalt 206 perform. Tremendous improvement regarding hole shot and planing speed. Problem was how they destroyed my wake for wake boarding and knee boarding. I tried many adjustments including lighter actuators and less lift to no avail.

The solution was changing the transom bracket to the kind that allow me to retract the tabs completely. I was able to use one of the existing holes, but did have to drill another hole as these brackets sit higher that the others. The actuator actually covers the left over hole below the bracket, which I filled by simply re-installing one of the screws.

A note to the smart tabs reps on this site....when talking to customers about which tabs to use, you should definitely ask them if the boat is used for watersports where a clean wake is preferred. Recommend to these customers to buy the transom brackets that allow you to retract the tabs completely so they don't encounter the same troubles I did.

What about the tabs to help low-speed planing, and some extra ballast to help throw a more defined wake?

The whole reason I want the tabs is to help me stay on plane at lower speeds, but I don't want to kill my beautiful, tall, rampy wake.

Trust me, the tabs will destroy your wake. I added 600 pounds of ballast to the bow, then sink the rear by trimming up the outdrive about 1/4. Boat seems to stay on plane pretty good at 20mph, or 2750 on the tach. Not sure if all the bow weight helps with planing, but keeping speed doesn't seem to be a problem. If your going to put on tabs, either get the helm controlled units or if you get smart tabs, get the transom bracket so you can raise them out of the water when riding.
