Does anyone know of a good website for decent discount snowboard equipment? Our 9 (soon to be 10) year old son has taken an interest in snowboarding. We're currently renting when we go to the hill. We don't want to sink too much money into this because he's growing like a weed, and who knows if/when his interest will wane. He'd need everything: board, bindings, boots, goggles, helmet. Thanks.

While im a 2 planker myself, If you have a Dicks Sporting Goods, or Cabelas near you they usually have some sales.
I would buy the things that he wont grow out of first. Goggle's, gloves, helmet (he will grow out of that) and maybe a inexpensive set of boots. then rent the rest for this season. Then if the interst is still there, get the rest at a season closeout when they are cheap.

As for the internet sales, I try never to buy online as i like to have someone to yell at if the produst is not up to par.

Look no further.. I have bought my wifes and my skis boots and binding as well as two snowboard packages from this site. You cannot beat their prices..

As far as boards go, you can spend a lot on Burton boards and your kid will get them stolen. These boards work just as well and you won't cry if it gets stolen.

I just got my son a whole package for $210. This included boots with the BOA lacing system. The BOA does not have laces, it has a dial and wire system to tighten the boots.

Also, if you already did not know it, you can mount the bindings yourself.

I just noticed you are from my neck of the woods. If you go to Buck hill, tell your kid to watch his board as they are stolen their all the time.

The Play it again sports in Burnsville has a large stock of used boards and boots if interested. However, you can get a whole package new at level nine for their used prices..

Let me know if you have any questions..

Thanks, that's the kind of site I was looking for. I've looked at a bunch of listings on CraigsList but all I'm finding is overpriced used stuff, or items that aren't the right size. I'll continue to keep an eye out, but generally I only use CL for true "commodity" type items where the product is pretty standardized.

Also, if you already did not know it, you can mount the bindings yourself.

Really??? I never even considered that as an option. Did you find some sort of instructional video online? I wouldn't even know where to place them exactly on the board.

I just noticed you are from my neck of the woods. If you go to Buck hill, tell your kid to watch his board as they are stolen their all the time.

Good to know. That's actually the place where he took his first snowboarding lesson. I used to ski quite a bit when I was kid and none of us ever had our skis stolen, so I guess I didn't even think about someone stealing the board. I suppose either I was lucky then, or I'm very naive now! ;)

Thanks again!

Re: snowboarding equipment

Mounting the bindings is super easy.. You just find the right orientation and screw them on with the provided screws and you're done.. The board has pre-tapped holes for mounting already..

Level nine has a bunch of instruction FAQ's that you can read.

As I said before, the people stealing the boards are looking for the Burtons that they will turn around and sell on CL. The police can't do much about it..

IF you can hold off the end of the year sales are great and usually take place in June-July.

Since your son is growing maybe you can coerce him to wait.

Do you have a local ski/snowboard club? If so there will be people selling the stuff their kids outgrew. Sometime they will have a preseason sale so at least the gear will fit for a while. Unless you're going a lot it probably makes more sense to wait on buying untill he's done growing.

Re: snowboarding equipment

two options to consider are used rental equipment at the end of season, or we went to sports authority and they had a huge end of season sale. you can probably find a good after holiday sale as well.
the benefit of that, especially being new to the sport is they had guys there to provide input as to what to get and what not. they mounted the bindings for free.
he got to pick out a design he liked right there as well as try on boots and different bindings.

Re: snowboarding equipment

Sorry folks, I am going to say stay away from internet sales for stuff like ski/snowboard equipment. If you do not know what you are looking at, you could end up with stuff that does not work for you. What happens if you end up with a binding that is to weak for your sons weight. Going down the hill the binding breaks, what is his knee worth to you?

I do not think much more of most big box stores, but you will be getting equipment that will work for its intended job.

If you are looking for a bargin, try your local ski/snowboard shop. Often they will have one of three routes to go.

1. A seasonal rental, new or nearly new equipment, that at the end of the season you return. You know up front the cost, and what you have next year (Nothing!)

2. Buy used equipment, they often have trade-in equipment. Next year what does not fit, can be traded in again. (Expect to get 25% of what you paid, for trade-in)

3. Buy New, trade in next year. Some shops will give you a set price that they will give you next year for trade in. normally closer to 50% of what you paid, they know it is only one season old. They make thier money back on reselling it used and on your next purchase.

Don't worry he will stop growing pretty soon. My daughter is 15, this is her third year on this set of skis, but new boots every year! The year I bought these skis, a week later she said, oh I want to snowboard, now she has both. (Yes spoiled, but she earns it! 15 and has had the same part time job for two years)

Re: snowboarding equipment

To each their own.. But do not eliminate the internet as a source. If you have some knowledge of what you want it will work just fine. I have 6 people in my family that all ski or board and I have bought a lot of equipment over the past years at Big box stores, ski swaps and the internet.

The two ski packages I bought fit perfectly and came with the bindings premounted and adjusted for our weight and ski level.

As for the boards, the mounting is not the same as skis. There are 6 or 8 holes prethreaded in each end of the board. You simply mount the binding in these holes and adjust the angle to preference and you are done. You select a board by size and stiffness, which is pretty clear in the descriptions. Weight adjustments do not apply here.

Ski swaps are good places to get the equipment, unfortuneately these happen in August.

I went out to check on a board from CL which was about $75 with bindings. WhenI got there it had a big chunk taken out. My sons board I bought new for $79 with $50 bindings.
