Re: So I'm now testing the Doral warranty, should be interesting

Update:

So we went boating friday and unfortunately the boat is still leaking so it isn't the drain plug receiever. Very frustrating.

Spoke to service and there is a high likelihood that there is no longer a warranty of any kind on my boat as mine was bought before the new owners took over.

They have emailed Doral with a picture of the stringer, stay tuned. This should be interesting.

Any silver lining on those grey clouds?

Just had a run of very poor workmanship from tradesman and products... is it just me or are we all being treated like fools?
If you give a ten year warranty on a hull surely that means ten years?

For sure. They are getting frequenty pings from me.

At this point though, if I were shopping for a bigger boat there is no warm feelings about Doral, but I guess they haven't figured that out yet.....

Man that really sucks that you haven't heard anything back yet. The way the economy is going now they can't be selling to many boats so you would think they would bend over backwards to keep their current owners/customers happy. No excuse for poor customer service.

Re: So I'm now testing the Doral warranty, should be interesting

Hello Gents, I have been waiting on a claim I posted to Doral for six months. The service manager said the claim has been approved and the check mailed but nothing has arrived. The claim was for 2 defective pumps which totaled $900.

I am very frustrated, as I have been told "the check is in the mail" Does anyone know if there is the equivalent of the Better Business Bureau in Quebec?

Thanks,

Andrew McKee

I own a 2008 Doral Mediterra.

I own a 2008 Doral Mediterra.

I believe the Quebec Commercial Certification Office is a close as you will get to the BBB.

One would think that keeping customers happy and encouraging them to want to stick with their brand would be a major part of their strategy, especially under the new ownership.

Let's just say they are doing the opposite in a big way.

Stay tuned.

Time to send a letter of demand me thinks...
Doral seem to be following the Volvo marine customer service model.

I still love using my Doral but if refuse to deal with warranty issues in a professional manner they should shut their doors and walk away from the industry! There are too many good professional manufacturers out there to put up with this behaviour.

FWIW - the picture that you posted of the stringer shows more than cosmetic issues. 2 cracks in the stringer are visible, the large one on the right side and a smaller one on the left side of the 'cap'. This could show evidence that the stringer expanded. It also looks like the stringer itself is 'bulged' in that same area.

Although it is hard to tell from just the photos, but you could test the depth of the cracks with a needle. If the cracks go deep into the fiberglass, then it is structural, not cosmetic.

Sturctural issue possibilities are a 'void' in the fiberglass lay-up and water penetration. If that be the case, then clearly a manufactured defect.

If you find cracks along the side of the stringer where the bulge exists, then it is more likely evidence of water penetration causing the bulge and the split on top of the stringer.

Either way, it is reflective of a manufacturing defect and should be corrected under warranty. (but you probably know that)

If the cracks are merely on the surface of the gelcoat and do not continue into the fiberglass, then it is more likely an adhesion problem in that local area with the gelcoat not bonding to the fiberglass (or something like that)

Best of luck with this, it is disappointing to see the troubles that you are having with the manufacturer. It is a common problem for boat owners.

Good points.

The Marina (which is reasonably arms length from Doral) has stated it's cosmetic and it's a problem with the rough gelcoat/cap. They have quoted to repair and the cost is "reasonable".

Needless to say, Doral has made a formal statement that they are not covering it under warranty for a bunch of BS reasons related to the new ownership, etc.

Even if its a losing battle, the fight will continue even if it means that I simply make aware new/prospective owners that Doral is nothing but trouble.

If Doral was smart they would simply fix it and protect their reputation. Needless to say at this point any new boats in our future will not be Dorals (can't believe they are so short sighted).

Stay tuned I guess.

Humm, I've been following this and asking myself what I might do. At this point I think I'd get out the list of boat shows that Doral is going to have a booth at and make up some flyers explaining your dillema. I'd walk in and sit in a very obviously public area near the Doral booth and start handing out flyers to potential Doral buyers. Won't cost too much to do that and you might end up making quite a few friends. Of course that list wouldn't include anybody at Doral but what the heck. They had their shot to do the right thing now it's your turn.

Not much to report at this point.

Marina is taking another look at the boat to further assess the issue. Once I get their report the heat gets turned up.

Thanks for everybody's interest and input.

Stay tuned.
