So mad I could cry !

Well ... despite my efforts of testing and prepping everything ... my transom glassing to the outer skin appears to have sucked royally ...

The resin mixture was still tacky by the time I got the transom slathered w/ a quick coat of resin ... and then bolted and clamped in as seen in the pictures. After getting all secured as much as I could I started tapping the back to make sure everything was solid .... I found on the right side of the transom ... below the 2x4 there were some hollow spots ..

If I could turn back time I would have put a s#*t-load of resin in and let it ooze out ... but not much oozing happened :(

Do I just drill some holes and inject resin to fill the small gap to make sure no water can sit in here ? I plan on doing 2x 1.5 oz mat on the outer-side of the transom to finish tying this in to the hull ... is this going to be good enough or did I just waste all of my time and build it worse than the rotten transom I just ripped out ?

On the upside I was able to get a 1/2 roll of 1.5 oz mat for $75

here are pictures of the before and the disaster after ...

Justakid, I have no answers for you, and I don't mean to hijack your thread.....but, I have a question concerning your transom. When I go to do mine, which will have an I/O....How do you fill the outer edges of the new transom that sits in the old skin? Meaning, the two pieces of ply, how are you going to mesh them with the hull? Do you fill them with a filler? If so, how do you prep the surface in between the outer edges before you tab it? Do you have to get in between and grind since it is likely to dry before you get to it?

***I had to edit because I wasn't sure if anybody knew where I was talking about. I'm talking about the perimeter around the new ply. See how he has a large gap? Mine will be the same way. How do we deal with it?***

I don't know if it is correct or not ... but I plan on ripping up the scraps of mat that I have and then glob them w/ resin and pack it around the edges .... then I will glass the new mat out about 4-6" to tie it into the boat ....

I know the frustration. Sounds like you had too hot a batch of resin leaving you with short working time. i noticed you haven't radiused the transom hull point of contact. (Sharp corners crack). This can be done by creating your own putty mish mash or buy a poly putty and then glass the joint with overlap the way you were discussing. If you have voids and you are not afraid of strength issues it is easy to fill the void after you have finished glassing and everything is cured. Simply drill a hole into the void and tap it to accept a standard grease fitting. You can use poly laminating resin or I have used 3M 5200 caulking compound in a grease gun. Connect it to the grease fitting and pump away. You should have some small air relief holes that will allow the compound to exit from the extremes of the void you are trying to fill. If you don't and you are an animal the pressure can de-laminate what you are injecting. Not to alarm you! Hope this is helpful. After thought, a s#**t load of resin has no strength and is not a good idea. Also be sure to fill the voids at all the turns you are radiusing with what ever you choose, putty or mish mash. (Mish Mash used to be made with asbestos fiber but that isn't legal any more so most builders use talkum or mill fiber mixed with resin to the consistancy of cookie dough, don't catalyse until you have the consistancy you want)

My completely uneducated opinion is....... even with the flaws think about how much better it still is that the original!

Re: So mad I could cry !

ok ... so I took off all my clamps today and figured it should be set by now and won't get better by leaving the clamps on ...

gave it some kicks and it seems pretty solid w/ an acception for the outer skin on the right .... it doesn't budge ... but when tapping w/ a hammer I can feel the gap in there :(

I think I will just drill a dozen holes and try to inject resin where I feel a hollow spot and the layer of glass on the inside should help me out ... between the two I think I might be ok .... guess it just didn't go as expected .... my real first exp. w/ glassing something together that large ... or glassin period!

I will keep on trucking .... I am hoping the stringers and deck go a lot better than this first round :D

Fill the void as you described. You can cheaply purchase suringes (sp?) for injecting resin into a cavity. Usually can purchase them anywhere you can buy epoxy supplies.

I have injected epoxy mixed with wood flour into similar areas successfully.
