So sand was poured into the oil fill of my 3.0L...

To make a long story short my dad doesn't like me anymore because I'm not on his side in the family break up due to his extramarital affair, and he broke into the storage warehouse where my boat was kept and he filled up the valve cover with sand (the police and my insurance are involved). I didn't see him do it but he confessed both to me and the police while the officer was interviewing my mom and I.

My local marina/dealer hasn't opened it up yet but they told me that the older 3.0L's like mine don't have baffles in the valve cover which would have kept sand from getting very far :(. And so, it sounds like the sand the dumb___ poured in went directly into my rockers.

They quoted me $250-6k to fix it. They plan on opening it up to see how far it went. At first I figured that the head could be removed and thrown in a parts washer and aside from an oil change Id be set but I fear its fallen down the oil passages and into the oil pan. The boat's insured for $4k (with a $250 deductible) so if they decide to total it I could surely find a good, used engine to swap in.

I'm mad. Very mad. But I figure it's alright because the police and State Farm will ensure he learns his lesson.

How bad do you guys think the damage is? My dad offered to vacuum it out and give me $200 , like a vacuum would do any good at all in this case. I don't know if he's forced or blown sand in but there's a pile of it up to the hole in the valve cover for the fill cap. It has NOT been started though.

What kind of damage should I expect to be found?

First, not not turn the engine over even the slightest bit.
Personally, I would pull the engine. Send the head out to be disassembled, cleaned (hot tanked) and a valve job done since you will never get all the valves back in exactly as they were.
The block needs dissassembled and hot tanked. Lifters replaced (I wouldn't chance i grain of sand).
New bearings, would not be required due to the sand, but honing and rings be because you can't get them back to their wear pattern either.
Use only OEM parts and specs.
Would probably be cheaper and better for you to get a new Volvo bobtail engine. It's a running engine with new exhaust tube that will bolt to your transom shield, and would be cheaper than all the rebuild.
Call for price of new engine.

Thanks Don. The things you mentioned that should be done to make sure things are right all make sense to me.

The new Volvo Penta engine...since it's a 3.0L everything should bolt/hook up to my OMC equipment right? I know I could find a late model whole VP or Alpha system but my transom isn't compatible (if insurance totals it I'm open to rebuilding the transom myself)

I may have spoke too soon about the Volvo. A 2006 version would have bolted up fine. But in 2007 they changed the drive to the SX-A and the transom shield is completely different. Not sure the new will bolt up to your OMC Cobra at all.
I'll do some checking, but better look at getting your's cleaned up.

Just wanted to say good luck! what a crappy situation to be in, both with the boat and your parents!

My '85 Capri has the old "Series 400" system, not the Cobra

then again if I'm correct, '85 was the first year the Cobra started getting phased in at any rate.

on Facebook, the official Bayliner group posted like "what boating are you doing with your dad this father's day?"..."my dad poured sand into my Capri's engine, so no, I am not boating, with my dad."
