Sorry...but this time the olympics are not on my radar. I hope our teams do good and get back safely. I really enjoyed Vancouver 2010....it was special it was truely Canadian....our hospitality was second to none. I have travelled in the eastern bloc countries...and what is happening in Sochi right now comes as no surprise.

Women's hockey was a nice snooze for me in the past. Watching Rus vs Ger this morning and this is some talented, fast, physical action. Pleasantly surprised!

I'm thankful we are playing games in the cold, and not having a cold war!

Thats what years and years of living under communism does . It will take some time to get up to speed with the right attitude . You would think somewhere in Russia there would be a city with better accommodations ..

I just do not get this "host bashing" at all. Is it a way to say our country is richer than Russia or is it an effort to make certain only "approved" countries get to play host?

Reading some of these posts it sounds like no one here has ever spent the night in a one star h/motel.

i am certain a lot of what is reported is media hyped up, but I also understand the harsh criticism of the host. Athletes and staff must stay in the Olympic village of the host for weeks. They do not have the option of changing venues if they are not satisfied like a US traveller picking another hotel. When basic needs likes pillows, blankets, and potable water are not available, I can accept bashing the host. I do understand the levels of service worldwide. I have stayed in places while in the Merchant Marine that would not qualify as a poor kennel. This was ,however, only for a day or two and by choice ( usually cuz I spent my BAQ partying the night before! : )))

From my understanding, the US Ski team is not staying in the Olympic Village and they are not eating the food in the cafeteria, they brought their own private chef with them.

So its OK to bash a region of people here in the states, but not a region of people who had SEVEN years to prepare for a 2 week event???:facepalm::facepalm:

....unfortunately 2 wrongs does not a right make. Bashing for no particular reason is kind of a 'race to the bottom' in and of itself....but lets face it, Russia is still a pretty popular target right.
The Olympics is sort of an opportunity to do a little better on some international understanding....maybe a good time to embrace that idea?

A 19 yr old local kid participated in the single luge yesterday. It was great seeing a familiar face and good kid represent. Aiden finished 24th and looking forward to the welcome home bash. Hopefully I can get some facetime and ask his take on the conditions.

Re: SOCHI Olympics anyone?

I play poker with several guys from Eastern Europe (Russia, Romania, Georgia) and they are primarily of the opinion that the Sochi build-up is very hard to justify, in terms of what the facilities will be used for post-Olympics. They are of the opinion that the effort host these games is largely a move for Putin to feed his own ego. They also mentioned some stuff about stories of huge corruption in the building of the Olympic venues, but I haven't heard much about that here.

It's always hard to know if criticisms of an Olympic host are politically motivated or if they have grounds in the host's ability to pull off the games. It's even harder to tell if you're not there...

Personally, the biggest attraction to this years Olympics are the pictures of the Russian women. I like their curling team.
