Well the glass "project" though never really started...http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=471908 is gone and I have found a 1975 16' Starcraft SS. I was supposed to pick it up on Friday but I couldn't wait. I fear that the motor will need some major work or replacement, but we will soon find out. The boat itself has a good floor and the PO has done some good and some not so good mods. Before the pitch forks appear as my screen saver and "More pics, more pics" come chanting through my computer speakers...Here they are.

Way to go Tundra, that is going to be a really sweet boat when you get her done. I would like to pick something like that up one of these days but I had better get the Islander done before I start really looking. The wife will have me living in another boat if I get one. Hope you got a good deal on that girl buddy.

I will be in Boise on Wednesday of next week for a couple of hours, heading to Pocatello for my daughters graduation.

Nice SS Tundra, I'm sure you won't regret the swing over to a tinny. I really like the bow rail on it, if youesver want to put a bow mount trolling motor on, you will not have to cut it.

That is a VERY nice SS. Nice buy. So what's up with the motor? Bad compression? Anything else is pretty much fixable on those Johnsons.

Nice boat, welcome to the Starcraft fleet...again:)

I'd assume that motor needs a new impellar, maybe a new fuel line and see how the compression checks out. I'm looking for the same motor for my 16' SS too. Nice score:D

Nice pickup! Are you going to try and get it out for Memorial Day festivities or not? Perhaps the motor will prevent this...

EZ - The motor is reported to have low compression on cyl 1 & 2, and can be fixed by replacing the Head Gasket. (So says the PO...) Not sure I will be finding that to be true, but I purchased this boat knowing I may have to find a different motor. I will be having it tested tomorrow. I'll report back the findings. If the motor is in need of replacement, it may be a while before I run accross something that will work.

ChuckNDiscs - Thanks...Weather does not look like it will cooperate very well, but Monday is supposed to be better.

HA - Thanks...If compression comes back fine, it will need the basic essentials, as well as a new water intake screen, and primer bulb.

KellyC - A good deal on these are hard to find close to home, this one happened to be 10min away...I probably over paid a little bit, but I was happy not to drive 1200+ Miles round trip to find one. Safe travels to you this weekend.

I do have a 1961 Starcraft Starlite 11' with a 1961 5.5 Johnson that I found a couple of years ago. This is what we(wife, daughter, and I) have done some fishing with, but it is getting smaller and smaller...It was time for an upgrade. (We will be hanging on to the old boat.)

Actually the fact that 2 adjacent cylinders are low.....is encouraging. May every well be a gasket.

Well the verdict is in...compression test was done, 125, 115, 105...Head came off, and there was rust on the cylinders. No scoring, and the rings were in very good shape. The cylindars were full of water from the intial test run. Due to the amount of water in the cylinders, the technician thought that it was the exhuast gasket leaking...Turned out the head was warped, and all the water was coming in through the head gaskget. Head was resurfaced(not sure of the technical term), rust cleaned out, and oil put in the cylinders. Motor was run for a while, then another compression test was done...130, 125, 120. I am in business. Hope to be out in the water this weekend, weather permitting.

So where you going to go out on the water at? I am guessing that it will be leaky peak, brownlee or black canyon. Yea I know that there are not a whole lot of places there. Hope that you have a very good time out there and that the weather holds out for you bud.

Re: Sold my '67 Caravel for a 16' '75 Starcraft SS

Well....I splashed a week ago Saturday. Motor started great, moved forward fairly well, but could not get it to reverse with out killing the motor. After about 20 min of running about 3/4 throttle, the motor started surging, then bogged down to a crawl, and we limped back in and called it a day. I thought carbs are in order for cleaning. The following week, I picked up 3 carb kits and went to work. I took off the air silencer and found that two of the carbs bowl drain scews were almost all the way out, and one of the high speed plug screws were part way out. I figured this to be the culprit, but went ahead and cleaned carbs, put new seats, floats, and gaskets in. Put them back together and took the boat out Saturday. Motor started/ idled great, tried to move forward and it took a while but got going, was going ok for about 8 minutes, bogged down and died. Got towed back in as I could not get it to shift forward. After getting it home, I pulled the plugs, and found water in the middle cylinder. (Thought that this had been fixed with the head gasket) Guess we got more work, but not sure where to go from here, or if it is time to look for a different motor. On yesterdays, trip I had used a brand new bulb and fuel line, also a new plastic fuel tank, as I had noticed some rust deposits from cleaning the carbs. If you have ideas great. I'll talk to the Johnson Tech tomorrow and see what needs done. I have splash photos, will try and get some posted soon.

Glad you got her out but sorry about your motor issues. The shifting is probably a cable adjustment of some sort. Don't know about the other stuff as I'm not real mechanical. I would say it's definitely worth a professional diagnosis before throwing in the towel on it.
