Sorry to hear it. It definitely appears that you got a bit of a lemon motor with that boat. I don't think I'd throw any more time or money into that one. Bummer!

I'm an amature also, but it's likely you could have missed something when you were cleaning it up after having the head off, or that something could have fallen into onto the piston. I've seen mechanics leave grease rags there, usually with poor results. It doesn't take much. With all the trouble you've had with that engine a new used one may be cheaper in the long run. I had a 61 40 horse johnson I had a lot of those same problems with. Set it on fire about 6 miles or so from shore with two about 12 or 13 year old kids with me. Keep up the good work, you'll get it yet. Someone once said what doesn't kill you will make you stronger, I'm either dead or atlas one I think.

Re: Sold my '67 Caravel for a 16' '75 Starcraft SS

Good news, I have found an engine for my boat.:D These are harder to find than I had thought they would be. (at least those on a budget:facepalm:) It's a 1978 85HP johnson. It currently does not have power tilt or trim:(. Looking into getting one before mounting the engine on the boat. I know it is a little heaver and more powerful than I was looking for but the deal was too good to pass up...I think that there are a few 16' footers on the iboats forum with an 85hp, would be interested to find out how you guys like it? I am going to have it mounted next week. Hopefully the weather will stay decent long enough to hit the water shortly after.

I finally got the motor mounted. I need to mount the control box to the boat. Tilt and trim work wonderfully. I am in the process of replacing the impeller. I hope to have that done tomorrow. I am excited to hit the water and do some fishing/cruising. Now if I can just get the rain to let up...

I took the water pump apart this weekend to find that the housing was melted where the water shoots up the tube to the block. So instead of just an impeller, I get to do the whole water pump.:( I guess it is better off that I do the whole thing. Part comes in on Thursday. Hoping to hit the water Thursday or Friday. Maybe both days :D

Nice boat. Im looking at putting a 1985 90HP Evinrude with power trim on my 16' Holiday, maybe when you get it running you can let us know how fast that boat going to go. Im having the same troubles as you are having. Got to love boating!

cgercais - Saw your thread earlier today. '85 90HP should fly! I have a feeling that the 85hp will be a little much for my 16' SS. (Will probably enjoy having a little extra though while pulling tubes and the like.) I expect only to be running at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle most of the time. I will be sure to post the results. Sorry to hear of your troubles. Good luck to us both. Luck has not been on my side recently.

Re: Sold my '67 Caravel for a 16' '75 Starcraft SS

Finally took the boat out for its maiden voyage with the new (to me) 85HP Engine this afternoon. I have never heard anything so smooth, and much more power, almost too much. This engine so much quiter as well. Makes me think that there was a lot going wrong with the 70hp that I could not see. We did run into a problem with the tilt/trim unit that I will need to figure out. It worked in the garage, it was tested in a test tank after it was mounted, and worked to lower the engine when we launched. After that, it was stuck in the full down position the rest of the way. All I could here were the clicking sounds from the cylinoids when you press the up and down. I had to manually release when we got back and loaded it up. I hope I get it working, that was a beast to manually pull up! Oh well there always has to be something. Off to the johnson forums to see what I can find on tilt/trim. Pictures are below.

As for speed...I was at 3/4 throttle and running at 4000RPM at 30mph. There was plenty more left. But that was enough for us (wife and kid along also).

Looking good! Those V4's are certainly great motors. Last week with just my 4 year old son and I in the boat headed downriver on glassy water I managed to eek out a top speed of 40.9mph on the GPS with my 90hp. Sweet :) It's usually more like 38mph.

Tilt/Trim issue will be covered as a "warranty" item by the Johnson/Evinrude dealer that installed it. One less thing I need to figure out how to fix, or "how much is that going to cost me."

barato2 - Yes smiled for my own entertainment :p Kid loves it. I wish we could get out on the water more frequently, but work has been extremely busy.

GA_Boater - pretty sure its the tilt/trim motor that has gone out, but I'll let the dealer worry about that.

It's been a while...The tilt/trim issue has been resolved a while back. There was a loose wire in one of the plugs the dealer put on that had caused the problem...Took the boat out day before Thanksgiving, have yet to hit the water again. Pretty cold here, though yesterday and today was about 53 degrees/very windy. Winter projects to include...Installation of new Lowrance HDS 7, and bildge pump. Happy Holidays!

Good to hear you're getting it all figured out. You having the open warm winter we are up north? Hit 50 in Spokane a couple days ago, and no snow. Altho we had 20 inches in the middle of Nov. So far it's only got into the single digits a couple nights, and no hyphenated numbers yet. Hope I'm not jinxing us.
