Get a grip David!!!!

Go out and do what you want. Don't be so pessimistic. Dooms day is not here YET!!!!!!

:)

I've done the launch/ retreve alone, it's really not that bad, same process as before only you need to be the one to retreve your tow vehicle so tying up the boat is in order.

When I boat alone I wear the kill switch lanyard.

I launch alone every time I go out, even if I take someone with me. The people I take out aren't boat owners and can't even park the truck and trailer right after launching. I just tell them to watch the boat and don't let anything happen to it or let anyone touch it so they feel like they're doing something important.:D

There's nothing like that last hour up to and after sunset on a lake, even more peaceful when you're alone and the water is flat. Experience that once and you'll be hooked.

As for alleviating the wife's fear of me drowning, I bought life insurance:D

I understand your hesitation and apprehension because I had it as well. Believe me when you get out there and do it, you will be surprised how easy it really is.

I like the one suggestion of practicing with your wife there before going it alone. Another comment I agree on, is doing it on a body of water you are familiar with. As always practice safe boating and it will be a very enjoyable experience.

I did it for the first time this year and it was great! Do what I want and go where I want. I'm pressing to do a full day by myself before the season ends. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: Solo Boating Worries.

why does your wife think you will drown? Do you not swim?

BTW the comments about a ladder are important. I assume your boat has a way to get in. First thing I added to mine was a ski step--for me in case I fell over.
In an emergency you can climb up the motor, even use the tilt, even though it's too risky to do this routinely. At least you can w/ an OB.

Thanks for all the replies. Amazing.

She thinks I'm accident Prone I guess. I have a 5 FT ladder coming off my Extended Swim Platform. I swim Great.

I have life 300K Life Insurance. Maybe I should go 500K. In that case she may drown me and cash in.

I'm in SW Florida,if I'm fishing the flats no worries.the boat is small, and the water is almost never over my head. Off shore, I anchor up. Then put out a long line with a float if I do go over I can swim to the line and pull my self to the dive platform. Hopefully!

The key to life insurance is to make it comfortable for the family but not too comfortable that she's tempted too off ya. Sunsets are great but make sure it's water you know, or you have a compass and/or GPS. The lakes go to pitch black pretty quick and all the lights on shore start looking similar.

Re: Solo Boating Worries.

I think one reason a lot of us, at least myself, got over this initial fear of boating alone is that we had to do it out of necessity in talking our project boats out after working on them. No way I was going to have a boat full of people when I was trying to adjust carbs, or smoke up the lake running a gallon of SeaFoam mix through the engine in the middle of the lake! In fact, I ALWAYS take the first trip of the year alone because that's usually when something is going to go wrong in my experience after the boat has been stored all winter. Nothing more frustrating than being on a boat with mechanical problems or needing adjustments, and you can't think straight because people are conversating away.

Also. like someone said, in situations like needing a tow, or even rough waves, sometimes you are also better off not having to deal with passengers on the verge of a panic attack as it diverts your thinking away from the task at hand. But all this is prefaced by using common sense preparation as everyone has mentioned.

This thread is making me want to take the day off and go boating alone! There's far more worries as captain about your crew/passengers (especially the 'helpful' ones, lol) Solo boating rocks! :D

Im going to go out this Sunday alone. Haven't broke the news to my wife yet. Once she understands that I will be ok and I'm not so nervous about it, I will have a good time.

don't tell her, just leave a note. She'll get over it. If she doesn't, go back out in the boat until she does.

(note= float plan)

Personally, I would rather have someone with me when I was doing maintenance. Its always easier to adjust the carbs while somebody else is driving the boat. Ditto for getting a tow. The last few yards might require a paddle and a hook to snag the dock. Always better with 2 aboard.

How true! I am a first time boat owner (about a month) with a 2007 FW Horizon 180, 4.3L and have only been able to get out 2 times so far. We're going to upgrade my wife's vehicle to an Xterra, but in the meantime have had to use my FIL's F150 both times (with him and MIL joining). To put *** bluntly, my FIL is a total knucklehead and void of common sense. I have had major stress on both outings with his "help" and am relishing being able to do this on my own (which is basically what I'm doing now), or just the wife, my 5 year old daughter and me.
Back it in, tie it off, park the truck, jump in and enjoy yourself. That's how I'll be looking at it when I do it!

Good point. A trusted and capable friend is needful, but an overloaded boat with weekend warriors and gear is not in those situations. But I agree with you.

Re: Solo Boating Worries.

I used to launch single handed....and I mean single handed....my right hand was in a cast. One thing I had to do was to use a wood chalk behind my back tire while retrieving the boat. If not, my truck would have a tendency to back down the ramp while loading.

That said I've boated for hours by myself and really enjoy it. Once while in the Bahamas my mate had an emergency and needed to fly home. I needed to be at another island 250 miles away, in 2 days the bossman was showing up. Difficulties do turn up once in awhile.

We had a guy stop at our marina a few weeks ago doing the "Great Loop" solo. He was in about a 29footer. It does take a special individual to spend that much time alone.

Good luck AZBoatDreamer......and have fun!
