Also keep in mind... if you are beating your back up you are also beating your boat up

That depends a lot on the boat. I can beat the hell out of a center console with a leaning post and my back will feel fine. I can wreck my back without hurting a 13' Whaler at all.

Who ?

Ya know, I thought that you had your Sea Ray off-shore when you posted, but now when we see the photos, we understand. :)
I would say that you have a very nice Ski-boat.

I'm pretty sure she'd be to blame for a sore back

Just a guess, looking at the boat and not the seat height measurer, It was made for 4, young, nimble, rubber boned, youngish people to go out and seed/sow oats. Or a quiet fishng? excursion into a secret cove.

a good boat is made for outdoor use. they take a pounding and if they can't, scuttle them. check every screw after a rough ride? Pathetic! what are you riding around in--your living room settee?

anyway, what often gets your back is not the bouncing but the swaying as you stand on the boat in waves and chop, or as you drive on uneven waters; your soine makes subconscious adjustments to keep your head level (and you don't get seasick). It's like having a constant massage, or work-out.

Also what gets me some is driving standing up with the wheel at my knees and leaning over the throttle--yes I have a dual console or fish and ski that is hard to drive standing up, but that's what I often do. Now if I had tape-measure-girl down there to brace against....

Yes absolutely but then I was specifically talking to the O/P about his boat... it isn't designed to hammer in rough water.....

My 20 wellcraft V-20 center console would be a different animal but wouldn't be NEARLY as comfy as his for a load of people doing watersports.

Slow way down so the nose stays up, on rough days in a bowrider that is about all you can do. And if you were pounding hard enough to notice it, start checking every screw on the boat. They sure like to loosen up when the boat is getting hammered for a while.

Only problem with that is that i was also towing.... so if i slowed down too much then the tube would lose its plane and i'd have to struggle to get them both back on a plane again...

I tried to persuade my lady to a late evening ride.... but no dice... :(

look into a lower pitch 4 blade prop for watersports... you'll be amazed how much easier you can yank a tube up... no more struggling.. she'll just pop right up on plane

Obviously, the boat is not the problem. The problem is in your powers of persuasion.

Lets start with the basics... what prop do you currently have? (3 blade? diameter and pitch)
Does your engine run really well just as it should? what is your current top speed and rpm?
Is the current prop in excellent condition?

3 blade... i dont know about the diameter and pitch, but here is what is stamped on the side of it.

48 832832A45 2/P
The engine runs tip top, starts up beautifully every time on the first crank. The prop is pretty good, it does have a few dings on the outer edge.. probably previous owner ran it aground.. but nothing major that would cause concern. Top speed with just me in it is close to 40mph and close to 4000rpm but with 5 adults it tops out at 32~34mph at 3400ish rpm...

Kind of like complaining about the jarring ride of a fiat down a dug out old dirt road and then comparing it to a truck with 12" of suspension travel ;)

To the OP - you were tubing? Then I assume you were doing it to yourself ;) It sounded to me like you were just out for a ride in rough water.

WOT of 4,000 RPM is way too low. Your engine is ???? 3.0L or 4.3L ?????
Your prop is a Mercury 14.25 x 21p 3 blade aluminum.

WAY too much pitch... I'm thinking a 17" pitch would make a huge difference for ya but I just texted a buddy.... We repropped his 17' 3.0 powered searay and I can't remember for sure what we put on it... I think it was a 17...... I'll update when he replies....

Whatever it was the boat JUMPED on plane and topped out in the low to mid 40's with 4 people on board..... it easily pulled 3 people on 2 tubes.

BTW I bet that if you look again the 2/p at the end on your ptop is actually 21p for 21" pitch

Re: Sore Back from rough water

Slip Away already DID look it up... I offered that so the O/P would recognize the pitch next time he saw it... not all but many props have the pitch either at the end of the part number or marked separately with the diameter IE 14.5 x 21

I talked to my friend and we actually put an 18" pitch 3 blade on his boat because it was in stock and he didn't want to wait on the 17" pitch 4 blade

either prop will give similar results but the 4 blade should accelerate slightly better with just slightly less top speed (maybe 1-2 mph) than the 3 blade... Both of those props would favor performance with a very full boat and or towing and a 19" pitch 3 blade would give you a few more mph on top with less hole shot... If it were my money I would ditch the 21 NOW and never run it again as it is lugging your engine (bad) and I'd pick up a 17" pitch 4 blade... Then either at the same time or later on if you want to spread out the spending I'd pick up a 19" pitch 3 blade for the days it's just one or two people on smooth water and no tubing..... It only takes a minute to change props out if something changes and carrying a spare on board is a really good idea.

Re: Sore Back from rough water

so a 17" pitch 4 blade would be the best for my application?

i'm running a 3.0 mericruiser 4 banger...
mostly pulling a tube.... i'll take her out this weekend and verify the WOT rpm... but i'm pretty sure it doesnt go over 4k rpm.. and riding solo is tops 40mph on glass...

pulling the tube with 2 riders and 4 adults on board is a chore... it takes a long time to get her past 10mph and up on a nice plane....
