OR
Leave America!
It's that SIMPLE
BYE!

My .02

Before you call me a racist I'm only talking about people living here in the USA.

I'm tired of being asked for English "press one"
Thats how (even though I don't agree with them) the Roman Empire fell!

Rant over! :)

Re: Speak English

Couple of comments:

1) English should be America's official language.

2) Many of those press 1 things are from private companies. I am not sure we should require that private companies do anything with their answering machines except maybe get rid of them . . .

3) Language is the first level of culture. Just look at the divisions in Canada for example. Along language lines.

4) Why do we assume that only Spanish speakers need bilingual help? I don't recall seeing gov't docs in any other foreign languages, especially ballots. Seems like soft racism to me . . .

Re: Speak English

There are many areas in Houston where the ballots are in Vietnamese.

I find it ironic that in order to vote, you must be a citizen. In order to become a citizen, you must prove you can read and speak English. Then we turn right around an allow them to vote in whatever language they want to.

My bank that I use the default language on 800 number is english. Same on the ATMs.

FYI, my wife speaks english as her second language. She too gets POed with all the spanish everywhere. However, in Thailand, there was many things written in English. However, English is the universal language.

KIZ, I'd just like to point out that literacy is not a prerequisite of citizenship...America is full of citizens who can't read or write in any language...

Re: Speak English

Below is a page on how to become a US citizen... Note #7 Have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand simple words and phrases in English

http://www.visaus.com/citizen.html

Farther down the page it talks about the test

You will be required to take a literacy test to assess your knowledge of the English language, unless you are:

1. Unable to comply due to a documented disability;
2. Are more than 50 years old and have lived in the United States for 20 years or more as a permanent resident alien;
3. Are more than 55 years old and have lived in the United States for 15 years or more as a permanent resident alien.

You will be required to take a test of your knowledge of U.S. history and government unless you are:

1. Unable to comply due to a documented disability;
2. Are 65 years old or older and have been a permanent resident alien for more than 20 years.

If you fail the tests, you will be given a second opportunity to pass the tests within 90 days.

Yep, I know all about it, cause the wife really wants to become a citizen, but needs to pass the test. There are many schools out there to teach everything you need to pass the test. Many are free. When we moved to the USA the wife insisted on going to an English class so she could learn more.

But these babies we keep having wont let her go. :)

Re: Speak English

The sad part about it is these loosers who refuse to speak english have ruined my appreciation of speaking foreign language.

I honestly cringe everytime I hear someone speaking spanish.

Here in the Baytown / Houston area, it is impossible to go anywhere and not hear spanish being spoken.

What really ticks me off is when you know the people speaking can speak english, but choose to speak spanish.

Its funny cause none of my hispanic friends from high school could speak any spanish. Thier parents did, but they didnt cause thier parents insisted they spoke english.

Now all this "hispanic pride" crap has taught them they arent proper hispanics unless they speak spanish.

What do you think would happen if we rejected someone (in any place of buisness) for not speaking english?

We've allowed this to happen. We DON'T care.

It's too late to start biotching now. We ain't sending them back and we don't have the guts to figure out who/what they are.

I've been saying this since the inception of iboats. All I got was a "yawn".

When the local mall blows up, you can thank yourself.

I'm not sure everyone here really appreciates how bad KIZ has it, living where he does, cringing every time he hears Spanish...he may never get a chance to smile.
