Hey guys....
Does anyone know is a C-91-69626 Trim piston installation tool, will work for both the 3/4" and the 1" trim piston rods?
Thanks,
Ed

Re: Special Merc tool

Ed,
I am pretty sure that is a spanner wrench. I rebuilt the trim and tilt on my 150HP, V-6 at the start of last season. I ended up borrowing the wrench from a friend that works as a millwright.
You need it to pull the end caps off the tops of the cylinders. The tilt cylinder (one in the middle) was a B%TCH!!!

Re: Special Merc tool

Thanks Guys,
I got a spanner wrench. No problem there. I was able to get the retainers off after a week of soaking in PB Blaster. The C-91-69626 is needed for reassembly.
Special thanks to Laddies for taking the time to look it up. I did a quick internet search for this tool, but have had no luck so far. I can only assume it was superceeded. Any know if this is true?

Thanks again!
Ed

Thanks for the BAM link Laddies. I've learnt a bit more about Mercury's numbering system. The letters and numbers like C and 91 are categories and designations not necessarily needed to find the parts I'm after
Once again, thanks, I appreciate your expertise!

Re: Special Merc tool

Anyone have a pic of the tool, or ever used it?? I'm working on a pair of cylinders I picked up cheap, and am trying to keep the price down, so if I can avoid buying a $50 tool I'd REALLY like to....

I found an adjustable pin wrench from the local hardware, not as strong as the merc tool, but did the job....eventually.
Some grinders have pin wrenches that may fit...mine didn't.

There is a photo in the Mercury service manual and the Mercury tool catalog but both have copyright numbers on them and I have been in trouble posting other copyrighted info on this site, Sorry.

Re: Special Merc tool

So its basically a pin wrench like one of these?

I have a Solec manual a buddy loaned me, and it doesn't mention the tool at all during disassembly (it does mention a 1 3/4" spanner wrench), but it doesn't mention C-91-69626 until reassembly. And I kinda got the impression it was something I needed to make all the parts fit back inside the cylinder before using the spanner wrench to put the nut back in.

It would be great news if this is the case, since I've gotta get a pin wrench anyways. I'm already in the process of the week+ soak to loosen things up.

You can buy the 1 3/4" spanner wrench at Sears. com That's where I got mine. Less than 20 bucks

there you go i would not want to install piston without this tool, it is a tight fit, there is a oring with a special thin band that has to be compressed tight to fit into cylinder housing, tool fits on top of tube and hits on ridge, bolt is then screwed down forcing piston in tube, may want to take to marina that has this tool.

Thanks chum. Any idea where I could get one?? I have yet to find someone with Merc tools in my area I want to give my business to. When I look up the part number on google, this is the only page that comes up.

Re: Special Merc tool

very rare tool indeed and not likely to be found because:

1) if they knew what it was and how to use it they are prob a merc. dealer and its against there dna to loan out tools.

2) if they had it in a box of tools they wouldn't have a clue what it is or where to use it as there is no p/n on it.

3) about the only way to acquire these tools is at an auction or from somebody that is practically dead.

Re: Special Merc tool

Awesome... Thanks for the Info chum, even if it wasn't what I was hoping to hear.

Anybody know if this is a "must have" tool, or just a "makes things easier" tool? I've got a fair amount of experience doing things the hard way because I'm too cheap to do it the right way, but I don't want to take the cylinders apart and then find out that I HAVE to have the tool to put them back together.

Thanks again for all the help, and sorry I'm such a greenhorn in this field.

I Purchased the last tool from Mercury (the tool that installs the brass piston in the sleve). I went to 11 marine shops in the Salt Lake City area. NO ONE wanted to work on and not one of them (3 being merc shops) had the tool.

If you still need it please PM me.

Re: Special Merc tool

So I FINALLY got my cylinders torn apart, and made a rather interesting discovery, that I thought I'd pass along in case its of any use to anyone else.

The tool is designed to aid in the installation of the slipper seal into the inner most cylinder. However, I discovered that one end of that cylinder (the one that slide over the piece that screws into the outer cylinder) has a slight bevel to aid in sliding it over an O-ring on the screw in piece. Using that, I was able to slowly work the one slipper seal I had that was still in good shape back into the inner cylinder with out the tool. All it took was a bit of hydraulic fluid for lube, some small flat head screw drivers and 5-10 minutes of patience.

I have yet to find out if I will be able to do the same with a new slipper seal on my other one, but I'm going to give it a try (if I can ever find a place to guy JUST the slipper seal, no a complete kit). I'll post the results when I do, and maybe some pics... I know exactly what I'm talking about and reading that its still as clear as mud...

Re: Special Merc tool

I believe the piston seals are teflon, rather than an oring. I never had the tool and never had any luck getting them in without damaging them. Sounds like 'moose has figured it out.....
