My new to me 19.5ft 1992 Century Mustang II has a 4.3L mercruiser 2barrel in it. The boat runs great and seems to have good performance, a little slow on top maybe but with a 17P aluminum 3blade prop and a hydrofoil likely slowing it down a little 39mph seems kind of reasonable to me.

It was rebuilt in 2007 and I have some parts listed on the receipt from the rebuild, lists "Flat top pistons for higher compression. Moly Rings. Roller Rockers." and some other items I do not recall, partiularly work to the exhaust manifolds, but no cam specs or anything or an actual compression ratio.

1) It has a 1.84:1 drive ratio, does that imply it was a 155hp model that year?
2) What are the differences between the 1992 155hp and 175hp motors?
3) The guy I bought the boat from bought it in 2009 and said he was told it was a 175hp 4.3L. Would this be achievable with the same cam and carburetion as the 155 hp motor?

My new to me '92 Century Mustang II has a 4.3L mercruiser 2barrel in it. It has a 1.84:1 drive ratio, does that imply it was a 155hp model that year? Damn that seems weak so I am disappointed!

However, it was rebuilt in 2007 and I have some parts listed on the receipt from the rebuild, lists "Flat top pistons for higher compression. Moly Rings. Roller Rockers." and some other items I do not recall, partiularly work to the exhaust manifolds, but no cam specs or anything or an actual compression ratio.

What are the big differences between the 1992 155hp and 175hp motors? The guy I bought the boat from bought it in 2009 and said he was told it was a 175hp 4.3L. Would this be achievable with the same cam and carburetion as the 155 hp motor? I am trying to select the right prop pitch and so on and true hp or close would be nice to know.

Ayuh,.... Nothing...

They measured at the flywheel, then at the prop....

The differences possible are,... 2bbl. carb, or 4bbl. carb, or Efi... each with slightly higher hp ratings...

Thanks Bond-o! That is good news I think. I found a site thru google that said 1.84 was 155hp and 1.65 was 175hp. Stupid internet.

Post the Mercruiser serial number of your engine, that will end all the discussion and you will know for sure.

Uh, I looked at the motor briefly last night and can't find a serial number. The sticker on the spark arrestor is MIA, the outdrive sticker is there, that is all. Where else should I be looking? Title just has the hull number on it.

I can't get wihin sight of it. Jumpseat, exhaust manifold, etc. Hope I never have to change the starter. 3.0l will be looking good then!
