Yeah the JB or Marine tex is what to apply in that application. Use a heat gun to warm the stuff up some on the board you mixed it on and use a flexible bondo spreader to apply to the pitting. It should go a long ways doing that and you don't have to sand it for 3 days. Then primer over it and paint if want to add protection to the skin.

I was able to fill the pitting on the inside of the aluminum transom skin. I used marine tex and it worked great. After that I primed and painted the inside of the aluminum transom skin. I finished the epoxy on the transom and had more than enough left to coat the top side of the floor plywood. With the long weekend coming up I hope I can get the transom in the boat, the engine well and transom cap back on and MAYBE reinstall the OB!

Looking good, the walleye's can wait till you're done with the boat, water temps are still to low. Finish that puppy up, and maybe we will meet ya on the water. Regarding the seal test with water, I say don't do it. I'll bet your boat is just fine, with so few rivets, at best you might consider gluvit (sp) to seal anything, but even that might not be required. Are you going carpet or vinyl for flooring?

I might temporally place the console and controls once I have the engine back on and the run down to Belleville lake to check for leaks before I put the floor down. I am having a tough time deciding which floor covering to use. Any suggestions?

Transom is in and the splash well and cap are on. Tomorrow I plan to start prepping the back of the transom for paint along with some other odds and ends while the paint is drying.

OK 2 things first we fished the Big D yesterday and you better get going! the bite is on!! We managed some really nice eaters, no hogs, don't care about big anyways.

On the flooring, I would avoid carpet. After you seal all your flooring, top bottom and most imp. edges, I would wrap and staple with marine grade vinyl and stainless staples, I would do each piece of your floor so you can remove w/o tearing your vinyl job up, in case you need to gain access below. Figuring out how to seal the fastener holes requires some thought. Water could enter and cause eventual rot. I've done a couple this way hand it comes out great, and I never had any rot issues, others here may offer other or better solutions.

Black and brown worked good on the river:joyous:

Re: Spectrum 1606 Rebuild...What did I get myself into?

Over the weekend I was able to install the engine well and transom cap and get some paint on it. The roll and tip method was a bit tedious but it came out pretty nice. I have a few sags I will need to sand down and touch up in couple days. It would have been much easier to leave all of the transom bolts out before painting but I had already installed them with some 5200 and I didn't want to deal with that mess again!

I finished painting the transom yesterday and I installed the rest of the hardware...that 5200 is EVERYWHERE! I finished installing the engine today.

We had the boat in the water today. No leaks and it ran great. It was a short test trip because it was pretty windy and cold. Now I can start putting down the wood and carpet!

The boat is finished.....well...almost. I have the fish finder/ GPS on order and the pictures do not show the old bow mount trolling motor. Finished until I can get some fun stuff.

Thanks for the pictures and info.....going to start my Spectrum 1606 restoration this weekend. Picked up a 87 Johnson reworked 60hp hp to replace the force last weekend and your pictures will really help. Nice job!

The boat has been great. Still dry as a bone. It rides great and handles lake erie well as long as I'm smart about the weather conditions. I have added lots of fishing stuff to it and its getting heavier. I wish I had a larger 60 or 75hp OB. The 40hp mercury runs very well though and its hard to justify buying another. Good luck with the build.

I am working on my 1606 currently. I picked it up in great shape and put a new 60HP Merc CT OB on it. The floor and interior have blue carpet on them and I am looking to replace all of that. I guess it was all redone right before i got it but it's blue and i am trying to make a duck boat out of this thing. It's inspiring to see that i can fix issues wit ha transom what whatnot as they arise.
