Spindle Size ?

I'm wondering how to measure the size of the axle spindles I currently have. I would like to order all new hubs and brakes for my trailer and just want to make sure I order the right size. I have a 1994 Venture tandem torsion axel trailer with 10" hydrulic actuated drum brakes.

The spindles I currently have look fine, but I'm just inquiring about there size. when I see them listed for sale, I see that they have sizes listed such as
1" x 1" / 1 1/16 x 1 1/16" / 1 1/16" x 1 3/8"

what exactly are these measurements showing?

My guess... is they're measuring the diameter of where the inner and outter bearings ride. ??? and if so which order are they listing it from inner to outter or outter to inner bearing.
Or are they just measuring the diameter of the threaded end (Castle Nut End) of the spindle. because I see on some site they have the spindle size down as just one number; such as 1"

How do I measure a spindle?

Re: Spindle Size ?

The spindle size is the inner diameter of the bearings. It is easy to measure with a ruler once the bearings are removed. There is no other way to measure them until you have them out. Make sure you measure both the inner and outer bearings as they are likely different sizes. I just went though that myself and had to get them at the local NAPA for $80.00 for two sets of bearings and seals. After I knew what size they were I ordered a spare set from iboats for $28.00 including seals. If you can wait a few days order them from iboats and save some cash. I believe I had them 4 days after ordering with standard shipping.

rndn - which bearing is listed first when giving the measurement Inner / outter. ???

thanks for the first reply. I thought that was how the spindles were measured, but I just wanted to confirm.

Re: Spindle Size ?

Typically they list the inner first but it doesn't matter. Just make sure if you have 1 3/8 inner and 1 1/16 outer you get the correct sizes when you order. It won't matter if it lists 1 3/8 x 1 1/16 or 1 1/16 x 1 3/8. Don't forget the seals as they are not reusable. Also make sure you replace the outer bearing races that are pressed into the hub(inner and outer). You can bang them out with a hammer and a piece of brass rod.

Re: Spindle Size ?

Until you get up into the very heavy duty trailers, the outer bearing is almost universally 1-1/16. On 1000 - 2200# trailers both are generally 1-1/16. Above that they have 1-3/8 inner bearings. Remove the hubs and bearings, note the part number on the bearings and take them to any auto or farm store. They can easily cross-reference them.
