splashwell attachment options

I have got my new transom installed . It is sandwiched in between the aluminum hull and another inner aluminum plate. The splashwell is then attached by 40 screws to the inner aluminum plate. After having coated my new transom in epoxy, it pains me to have to drill 40 little holes into it! I suppose worst case , is to seal each hole with 5200 or epoxy. I would prefer to keep my new transom from having 40 potential disasters waiting to happen. I thought about using epoxy and glue the splashwell, but that would make it kinda permanent.
Any other ways to attach it that prevents me from having to drill holes, or permanently gluing it?

How bout Rivets??? Or usine 4200 which is NOT permanent but still Watertite and proof.

Re: splashwell attachment options

rivets would still require a hole to be drilled.
Is 4200 strong enough to hold it in place? For that matter is 5200 strong enough to hold it in place? This will be an aluminum to aluminum joint. Not sure how much force is applied to the area, while the motor is running and boat bouncing round. I would imagine there would still be some flexing going on in the area. Perhaps , I could use 4200/5200 and just a few screws? You gotta figure a few of those 40 screws will leak eventually. maybe by putting in just enough, plus the sealant I can reduce the odds.

Just looked up 3M 5200 on their website. There is a fast cure version too. Also it states it rated for high strength bonding between metals. Looks like a winner to me.

Hello m8..

5200 would be my choice for sealant for this project..but not without fasterners..

Possible to weld it ? or even tac weld for holding then seal the rest ?

Like Wood said.. pics please...pretty please...

Here is pic showing the splashwell from the backside. You can see all the nasty holes where the screws go.

Here is the backside ready to accept the splashwell.

Here it is installed, showing where the screws would go, from the backside bottom.

Here is a pic from the top.

I am unable to get the pics to show up in the message, so I made them as attacments.

here is a close up .

Re: splashwell attachment options

I had to add the pics as attachments. I tried the method as you mentioned, but it doesnt work for me.
Anyway, I was thinking about using PL for an adhesive. Im going to test glue a few scraps together and see how well they bond.

Drill it, use 3m5200 and be done with it. That splashwell needs a tight seal and takes allot of abuse. What I described .....every starcraft owner has gone through

Re: splashwell attachment options

I put about half the screws back in mine, then ran a bead of 5200 around it. I have about 5 hours use on it including tubing and pulling up some really fat skiers. The 5200 bead looks just like it did on day one...but I guess time will tell.

Re: splashwell attachment options

Pics are looking good. I think I have to go with Bob on this one. He is the "Tin Boat" Guru here on iBoats and his experience is extensive. I know it will be a PITA but I would pre-drill and coat the screws and the holes with 5200 and also run a bead of 5200 around the perimeter. Like Bob says it needs to be sealed because of the way it attaches to the transom. There may be other opinions so wait and see what others may say.

Good luck which ever way you go!!!

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: splashwell attachment options

Phantom, I would never contradict NB and won't start now. I can only tell you I have removed my splashwell too on my 18' ss and its getting all the screws/rivits back with sealer. I figure there is a lot of strain on a transom, and I would rather make darn sure I seal the wood good and install it right than watch my boat or motor go bye-bye:mad: My knee brace had broken on previous owner so I don't trust just that for strength. Just my 2 cents.
BTW, I can see the pics.:)

Re: splashwell attachment options

ok, i decided to put most of the screws back in with 5200. I put a bead of 5200 between the mating surfaces and on top. Hope no water gets in them screws, they were 1.5 inch screws..
