If you're ever in Southwest Florida, look me up!

Been there before, won't make that mistake again.

So that's why you're as far away as you can get from here huh? Just out of curiosity...What did you not like about it? In all seriousness, it certainly isn't for everyone. It's flat... there are mosquitos... etc. But I love it!

Granted, Orlando and the center of the state is a bit stiffling in the summer, but here on the coast we get a nice breeze most of the time. I have been in the mid-west in the summer and trust me, it is MUCH hotter there than here.

Hurricanes? Yeah, we get a few of those. At least then we get some "unplanned urban redevelopment." :D

But Don's right - it's nice that we are not all the same. (Someone's gotta live somewhere else! ;) )

Re: Spring Is Coming

I cracked a block last year and I know it was my own stupid fault, I missed a plug. I payed dearly for it, but I will never do that again; lesson learned. This year, I took my new engine to a mechanic and had them do it and I asked them how they did it before I dropped it off so I knew how they were going to do it. Not sure I will be doing my own winterization in the near future as my storage facility has a shop onsite.

Re: Spring Is Coming

You know sometimes, I think that people have become so dependent on what they read on 'the internet' that they have lost the ability to think for themselves and use common sense. Back when I started working on my own cars (1972 or so) I learned a lot from a friend whose Dad was the shop manager of the local Ford dealership, they always had interesting cars around their house. I was so impressed with his knowledge, that I was determined to learn, so every car I have owed since then, I have the factory shop manual. Same thing with the boat, it was 14 years old when I bought it, but I still got a factory manual. All I did, was follow the steps in the manual, the first time I winterized it. And guess what, no problems, even did the filling of the drive the "OMC WAY" much to my Merc owning neighbor's disapproval, and no problems, because that was the RIGHT WAY.

SO to all you backyard boat mechanics, get a real MANUAL, follow it, make sure what you are doing makes sense (a water drain, when taken out of the block....should be followed by.....WATER!!!)

sorry about the rant, but I feel all the beginners getting 'net advice, while it can be good, should be reading shop manuals, instead.

Not only that, but they like to believe the EASY way of doing anything must be OK.
Right or wrong, good or bad. If it sounds easy, that must be the way to do it.
All that "Internet Info" is not always right.

I just had this conversation with somebody at work today.

He raplaced the waterpump on his car weekend before last. He didn't make it to work on time monday because the car died, engine just stopped. H noticed that the temperature gauge was pegged(past 260*).

He talked to the mechanic today, and I don't know the results, or the total bill, but there is a bleader valve on that engine so the cooling system can be purged. I told him, that if he had purchased the FSM instead of the parts store book, it would have told him about it.

RESPONSE - "I can't afford $150. for a F*&^%$# book!!"

My Response - "How much is the bill at the shop?"

I never got an answer, he just left the room. Oh well, some folks just never learn.

Re: Spring Is Coming

How much is the book? well about....1- 1 1/2 hrs of labor at most dealers....

I am on JeepsUnlimited too, and it's the same thing there, lots of guys there have thousands of dollars worth done in mods to their Jeeps, then they're asking a bunch of strangers on the internet, what trans oil to use, how to change their brakes, and so on....when all the answers are right in one book....that only cost me $90 for my 98 Grand Cherokee...the one for my OMC was even cheaper, $45 from my local dealer! I just don't get it, maybe my generation was taught to learn this on your own, not depend on sources that may be less than reliable, and while not every problem is solved with a FSM, you gotta at least know the basics.....and know a good local mechanic when all else fails, or you know you are over your head...and headed for trouble!

Re: Spring Is Coming

I winterized my boat the easy way, hope it works! I removed the 2 drain plugs and yes I did probe it and more water came rushing out. Then I grabbed the muffs and a few gallons of anti-freeze later I had my boat winterized! I took it to the shop today for a full tune up and to have all the lube and oil changed, and every greased up. The mechanic didn't say I had anything cracked so I must of cheated death this year! Don't try this at home!!!
