Spun eng backwards with wrong starter, poss problems?

Volvo prepped Chevy 305 2bbl standard rotation.

We started out with a perfectly tuned and running eng with a sticky bendex on the starter.

Long story short, the wrong rotation starter (Mis labeled) went in and cranked the motor over till it hydro locked. Original starter back in, pulled the plugs kicked it over a few times, plugs back in eng fires up but alt belt is squealing then is thrown off and snapped.

Now, eng fires up and runs (No alt belt) but dies out after a few min. I know I may have been leaning on front of the motor to reach the back plugs and the belt was fairly worn to start with but..

What should I look for that may have been damaged by spinning the eng the wrong way?

Doesn't Volvo have the sea water pump on the engine? I'm sure you made a mess of that pump if you spun it backward. That's what probably locked up the belt. The beauty of a Volvo is that its now easy for you to change the impeller. Not sure why you would get Hydrolock from cranking backward.Are you sure it was a sticky starter to begin with?
Actually, now that I think about it, if you run an engine backward, the exhaust becomes the intake! If you have water in your exhaust, its sure to get sucked in. Food for thought

What year and motor, drive?? 305 Chev Volvo covers a lot of years. Alot of different pump setups ANY info will help.Jerry

Straight inboard no outdrive.

Late model 02ish

What I am looking for is could spinning the alt backwards while cranking tear up electrical sys? and ign sys?

Lesson: Never trust what the parts counter gives you. Check it for yourself!
