Did I spin the prop?

Do I have bad gas?

Or is this electrical?

What should I be looking for??

Keep in mind I haven’t been able to get it back in the water and under load due to weather….

I was out on the water all day at different cruising speeds and on different waters, back bay and out front in the ocean on easy roller waves.. I noticed when I was trimming out, up down the engine seemed to give or drop rpm’s.. when all of a sudden engine dropped rpm’s so I came to no wake speed..

I have an 88 21’ 4-winns with a rebuilt 4.3l V6 220 hp engine I/O Cobra with less than 10 hours on it…

I tried to get back up on top and couldn’t get above 2500 with the nose in the air. The engine was bucking and had a couple of back fires pop out at me.

I got it back to the house and topped it off with gas… I used about 17 gallons on a 50 gal tank this day..

So my thought was that since I was running out front I kicked crap up from the tank and into the fuel line..

So dumped 2 bottles of dry gas and 2 bottles of carb cleaner in the tank and then topped it off. I cleaned the battery connections and checked the distributor connections and found some corrosion on the wire, especially on the coil so I hit them with a file cleaning them..

I fired it up in the driveway and everything worked ok.. ran in neutral and brought the out-drive up and down about 20 times and the engine bucked and stalled out 4 times out of the 20… Then I put it in gear forward/reverse up some on the rpms without it bucking… Remember I’m not on load with it in the driveway…

Then I replaced the water/fuel separator filter and noticed the old one had a bunch of particles floating in the gas….

With the new filter on I raised and lowered the out- drive and the engine didn’t buck or quit on me…. I did this twice over two days…

I pulled the new filter off and dumped it into a bucket and didn’t see anything I then dumped the bucket/gas into a glass and let it sit for an hour and didn’t see anything swimming or floating like water etc…

That’s the story… What should I be looking for next or doing if I run into the same problem when I get it back in the water under load???

Fuel filter?? Carb or Injector clogged?? Alternator or Generator??

Particles in the filter could be a sign of your problem. Was this the first time out this year?
Popping back thru the carb could be many things but i got a feeling bad gas.Put it in the water and see..
88 should be a carb engine,no injectors...i guess

Sounds like chum in the tank. Take it back out, stay on the back water (close to land) and run that crap out or drain it and have a bon fire for the 4th. Recheck all filters before and after. Problem with most gas additives they hold the water in suspension, so the seperator looks good but the problems stick around. You won't know it until it sputters again. Cheapest option I know of is get it out of there, WOT! I hope she goes like h#ll!

Better not go WOT on a rebuild with only 10 hours on it!

Never run it with the drive all the way up.

It's possible that your fuel screen (in the tank at the end of the fuel pickup) might be clogged. You'll need to get to the fuel connection on the tank and remove it to check. If it's clogged it's just doing it's job of preventing the "stuff" from getting to the filter!

I had to remove the back seat and pull up the floor to get to mine. I also replaced the fuel gage sender while I was in there.

I also removed all the fuel in the tank by siphoning all the fuel (and debris) out of the tank. The siphon hose works like a vacuum...if it's big enough you pretty much get everything out if you tip the bow up a little while siphoning thru the gage sender hole.

Cheers,

Rick

Also, be sure to check the filter on the fuel inlet side of the carb where the fuel line attaches.
