Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Here is a pic of my prop...

Left or right rotation? Looks right to me???:D

I was on Mercury Marine site yesterday... Entered info in their "Prop-finder" and everything comes up 20-21"P even in stainless...

I still think I'm leaning to the Stelitto 19"P x 14.25"
I noticed the Solas was a stern lifter also...

Hey Gunner,

did you get my 2.0:1 drive ratio info?

Yes, that is a standard rotation (right hand) prop, although it's hard to tell in the Pic. looking at the lower blade the smaller part (leading edge) is on the left, and the fatter trailing edge (with a little cup) is on the right, meaning the leading edge (on the left) pulls through the water first, hence in a clockwise direction.

I believe iboats has an exchange program, if you keep the prop in good shape, just in case you find you need a 21"pitch.

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Talked with Mercruiser about my prop ID.

L 48-832832-C1-21 is 14.25" x 21"P... He suggested finding a dealer to let me try out props... Of course Merc props...

Gunner you out there? That Solas is a stern lifting prop... Not sure if you got my 2.0 drive ratio numbers... It wasn't 1.8 like the dealer thought.

TGIF!

Peace out!

More work on the boat tomorrow...

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Lets clear a few things up...The Titan is stern lift overall lifter...The Titan HP 3 is a raked bow lifter....

3)The Titan is designed to handle high power applications.

Titan propeller is designed with a high camber blade section and large blade area to provide better load carrying and fuel efficiency for the high power marine engine.

The newly developed MF Titan series propeller is specially designed to match the Bravo Two driving system. With its excellent efficiency and performance makes the new MF Titan series the best choice for the sport fishing application.

The High Rake Titan series is very suitable for high speed

I am going on with the numbers you have provided...4800@42mph and a 21p 3blade alum gives you a 13% slip...probably reality and good numbers

Now going with a 20p ss hopefully you will gain in effeicny...about 3% which should net at 43 mph...given that the Solas is a bowlifter...:p....decreaseing the wetted surface area....maybe 1-3 mph above and beyond 43....along with a midly better holeshot....(less pitch)

Make no mistake the stilletto is a great prop but not a 20p and do not believe that it can make up 1" of pitch the solas is no under performer i have both.

Now all the stuff is just opinion or thoughts...and the 20 should by the numbers work out better. But what no one knows is how they the props will react with your hull....im just bett'n on the numbers and the bow lift as i have experienced and solas states. My experience with the stilletto in a 3blade.. is a overall lifter and a great one at that...and the 4 blade is a fantastic stern lifter....maybe a bit to much for my old tub but it makes me happy...tons of midrange response..:D

I believe i-boats does have exchange program for Solas you may want to call them. In the end wether its a Hustler.....Stillettoo or Solas they are all great props and you will do well with all of them...

The reason for the drive ratio was to make slip calc on your current setup...if i were you id try and confirm your tach accuracy to within 100 rpm....that is how close were splitting hairs here and most older tachs are famous for being off by several hundred rpm..

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

TG, if you've had experience with both those two brands of props, that's more then I can say, and it sounds as though you prefer the Solas HR Titan 3, It does have a racy squared off blade (similar to racing props I've seen in the past), I'd give it a shot myself, but where are you finding it? I've looked for that model out of curiousity all over this site to no avail?

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

I can't find that Solas Titan 3 either? At least in 20"P

To sum up.

If I choose the 19"P x 14.25" Stiletto I will get a better hole-shot, handling, and about the same speed as my current set up.

http://boatpropellers.iboats.com/Me...andard&**********=457128094&*******=495303139

If I get the Solas Titan 3, 20"P x 14.75" I'll have better top end speed, good handling, with slight possible gain on hole-shot. ( I found Titan 3 from Solas page, Blades 3, diameter 14 3/4, Pitch 20, Direction R, Part number 1551-148-20 3, Is that diameter okay??? )

http://www.solas.com/products/propeller/oem_brands/Brand.asp?FkindNo=F21&SkindNo=S01&PdKd=SS

And if I go for the Hustler Aluminum 21"P x 14.25", I'm about stock with some possible improvement.

Correct?

I have an external tach I use for timing my 340 Barracuda... This spring I'll check out how accurate my Bayliner tach is... I think there was still some more room on the throttle, but just kept it at 4800... Like I said... Only driven the boat 2 times :(

i-boats is checking to see if they are going to retail that prop, It exist's just maybe not here..I dont want to post a link to its availbility...not good for the home team...:D....Bruno might be watching.... not gonna cross anyone with that name....;)

I just think that the 20 in the Solas along with the bow lift design will be a better choice...If Stilletto would have a 20 that would be a different story.

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Hi Jay,

Now what you are sayin is with your SS prop being the same size and pitch as your aluminum, you gained hole-shot and improved RPM's right? This is frying my brain.... Is your SS progressive or fixed pitch? As it should have dropped rpms at WOT.

I'll see if any of the dealers will let me test props, or if they have used SS in stock... Good idea... Bummer is we have ice on all our lakes now... :(

I don't doubt what the others are saying about the SS props usually costing rpms on a pitch for pitch basis - I've heard that from many people, so there must be a lot of truth to it.

Strangely enough, I ended up with a 150 rpm increase, and my SS prop is cupped. I also ended up with a slight increase in WOT speed, as measured by GPS. The brand is Powertech. Heck, maybe I should send it to the prop shop to see if it was re-pitched slightly!

I didn't really care about hole shot, but did want to be able to hold plane at lower speeds. Because of this, blade flex came into play and that was why folks were recommending the SS wheel to me.

As to the reason why I ended up with an increase in rpm, I really can't say why I have experienced that. I suspect that it has something to do with drag caused by fluttering blades on the aluminum prop. My boat is underpowered by most people's standards. It is rated for 130hp and I have a 65hp Johnson on it. Maybe what was happening was that I was getting more blade flutter on the aluminum prop than most people would, because it was more highly loaded at the speeds that I typically run. Frankly, that's just a WAG, though.

Unusual yes, but I'd take a WAG (wild eyed guess) that maybe the exhaust ports/passages are bigger, or less restrictive, on that SS prop (like, I think it was the Apollo prop advertises) freeing up horsepower! I don't know what you've got? but, those early 3cyl 65hp johnyrudes were one of the first to use thru-hub exhaust, maybe the stock prop was not as efficient in this area, as the newer ones. I'd sooner believe that ;)

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Will a 14.75" diameter prop fit on my Alpha one drive with out any clearance issues?

Thanks!

14.75" should fit on the drive, but you may need to replace the torque tab or clearance.

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Bump?

I hope not... Not sure why Solas would sell a prop for my drive if it would have clearance issues? My current set-up is a 14.25 diameter
Prop and it seems like I could fit a 15.5" prop with no issues (see pic) The 14.75 is only 0.50" difference, which equates to a total of 0.25"
increase of the circle on each side from it's center in space... Correct?

Anyhow

I ordered a Stainless Solas HR Titan III, 20"P X 14.75" for $300 including shipping... I hope this will be a fun prop for
My first new/used boat! If not I'll sell it and try again...

I would also like to thank everyone for their time and patients, assisting me with prop education. iboats is an incredible plethora of fine folks
and information.

I can't wait to share my results with the new prop!

Unfortunately, we are currently having a blizzard, and the boat interior is gutted cuz I'm working on other projects...

Modest audio system,

Bow mount MotorGuide W55 trolling motor,

Bow fishing deck with pedestal seat,

Trim gauge, and depth finder,

3 battery 12v system with guest charging.

Built in storage boxes under stern seats.
