Stalling at idle after warmed up

Hi everyone,
Pulled my boat out due to stalling and starting problems.
She's a 19' Bayliner Capri 5L ,holds an Penta Volvo AQ225E,4 barrel and i/o is a penta 275.
Starts good when cold, runs wide open, but stalls out at idle after warmed about half an hour later. Will start fine, start trolling and 10 minutes later stall again.
The high speed was affected also and before i pulled it out would only hit 3 g's WOT.
Since then have changed plugs.
Installed new ignition coil, cleaned connections on resister
Checked pickup tube check valve.
Fuel separater replaced.
Checked filter screen at carb line.
Always use stabalizer when winterized.

I've ordered a tuneup kit,points,condenser,& cap.
The rubbing block is badly worn and the shaft is now greased.
The gap was practically closed at the high point on the shaft.
The points look good but are very difficult to set now with the rubbing block the way it is.I tried to adjust at .017" ,she started but a little rough.Dwell showed 20,so i closed the points to .014 and it got worse. Can't seem to get the dwell up to 31.
I suppose i should wait till i get the new points tommorrow and give er another go. ;)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you check to make sure the choke was opened? At idle with a warm engine the choke being on would flood the engine and make it die.

You'll have to start ruling out things it could be. If the choke is Ok another thing I would try is to check for fuel. Right after it stalls take off the flame arrestor and advance the throttle, you should see gas squirt in the barrels. If you don't, it's not getting fuel which could be any number of things but an old cracked fuel line can cause the problems you're experiencing and is a cheap fix. Just a process of elimination.

This sounds completely carb related to me... Time for a cleaning and synching, also sounds like the pilot screws are out of adjustment.

Re: Stalling at idle after warmed up

Spent the morning in the sun gapping the old points.
Sure would help if i could see the numbers on this feeler gauge...
Finally got the dwell up to 30 +3* and she smoothed out nice.Rather than pulling the cap,set gap,put cap back on,got really repetitive ,I grounded the distributer coil, pulled the rotor and cranked till i hit an average dwell angle near spec.
I wish i would have got a dwell reading before i reset them.

Pulled off the spark arrester to watch the choke.Primary & sec were closed cold and pri opened slowly as warmed up.Almost fully open at 140*F maxxed.
She never cut-out once after an hour,so I think i got it tuned again, but won't know for sure till i launch

Picked up the new tuning kit, never had time to install the new parts yet.Oh,got a new feeler gauge too :)
Ignition 5-25
As the gap decreases through wear of the rubbing block, the ignition timing also retards, causing the engine to lose power.

I suspect this quote from the manual was the culprit.

Thanks for the help, will post back later

Buy a Pertronix electronic ignition kit. Throw out the points, condensor and ballast resistor. Never have to worry about dwell again. You will not regret it.

Have a great day,

Points and condensor will cure it.

The Pertronics kit WORKS.

I've sold LOTS of them
