Hello all,

I am undertaking a restoration on a Starcraft Super Sport.
This is my first boat, as well as restoration. I am pretty handy with tools and learn quickly, so hopefully everything will go well.

I hope the link shows up for my pictures.

I also would like you experts help in identifying the year of this boat.

any help would be apprecieated!!

Got started today by cleaning out several years of leaves, sticks, and just plain nasty!!

I am looking forward to getting this out on the water by spring!!

Sweet looking project Chuck, I can't help you on the year, but I can be the first to welcome you to the Starcraft club/cult{lol}...there's quite a few of us here and I'm sure others will be able to help with the year and with any questions you may have...looking forward to watching your progress!

You have certainly come to the right place! Welcome to the Starcraft club. I can't tell you exactly what year by my guess would be very late 60's/early 70's. Good luck with your project. Make sure you make you make your way down to the Starcraft manufacturers section on here as well. Also, please update your profile with your location. We SC guys like to know where everyone is from.

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

It is because of finding this site and the wealth of information on here that I undertook this project!

Made some progress yesterday, but now I have a couple of questions....
1. What is the red gunk that is in the bow of the boat, and does it need to be that thick?

2. After removing the transom, the inside of the aluminium skin is covered in a whiteish brown slime. What is the best way to get it off?

3. I have checked the rivits on the seams and don't seem to have any that are loose but there is a definate leak where the bow meets the bottom. Will Gluvit seal this up or do I need to be going another direction?

I will add more pics to photobucket shortly.

Thanks.

1. I think a lot of us have that gunk. I'd leave it be.

2. Wire wheel

3. If it isn't a crack or a really loose rivet I would think Gluvit would take care of it.

for #2, if not a wire wheel then some steel wool should help, with a bit more elbow grease anyways.

OK, as I am stuck out of town working..........don't they understand I have a new toy??.............. I am wondering where all the stuff goes in this boat?? gas tank for starters, just removable tank(s)? Built in? How large? Where is the best place to put them? up front or in the back?

I have very limited knowledge on this as this is my first boat.

Can't wait to get home Friday so I can dig in!!! Never thought I would be wanting to scrub and clean soooooooo bad!!!!!!!:D

If you are using portable 6 or 12 gallon tanks then they will fit nicely under the splashwell. This is what I will be doing since my 16' rig isn't quite big enough to warrant a larger, below deck fuel tank although I would like it very much and I'm still considering one.

You could also get an above deck tank that is larger(12-20 gal) and install a fill on the splashwell, or a below-deck tank(aka belly tank, 12-32 gallons usually for boat like yours) with a fill installed as well.

Some choose to install or store the tanks in the bow to balance the load(great for closed-bow rigs), but most folks keep the fuel in the stern either below or above deck.

you'll have to change that name after the restore! LOL
play with your photo bucket where you can get the link to share a photo in a forum then use the the little sq that looks like 2 mountains in your post to copy and paste your link( next to the quote) and your photos will appear in the body of your post.
looks good and you did land in the right place these guys have been there but are always willing to see how others are doing it.

You can resize them in photobucket to the forum-acceptable size of 640x480 with a single mouse click. Please do

Boat looks good!

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

I have a few questions I need som answers to. I have tried searching the threads with no luck. I probably did not do it correctly.

1) What is PL? Where do I get it from?
2) Are there any alternitaves to seal wood other than poly/epoxy resin and cloth?
3) What is the best way to cove holes in aluminium? My top deck rails look like swiss cheese from years of rod holders, anchor cleats, etc.

Thank you to all!! The info I am learning reading these posts can not be bought!!

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

1. PL is a polyureathane (sp?) based construction adhesive. It is known to hold up well in wet outdoor applications. It is available at most home centers such as Home Depot.

2. You probably could come up with an alternative to epoxy or poly. But these are the compounds that most folks are using. The basic idea is to seal off the wood from water.

3. I've run into this problem myself... I usually just run some screws and nuts into the holes and paint over them.

I hope this helps.

I've got a bunch of small holes on my gunwales as well, and I'm considering patching the small ones with JB weld and sanding and painting over them. For larger holes you can do small aluminum patches in conjunction with the JB weld for a more solid patch.

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

I have been lurking about a year and a half and I have not posted yet but your boat has broken my silence. My brother has a boat identical to this and I thought it was his boat. I have been trying to talk him out of it.
On another note, other people have talked about the use of steel wool and a wire brush, make sure they are made of stainless steel because steel will imbed in the aluminum and will cause more corrosion. Good luck with your project and I will definitely be following this post.
