Re: Finally, progress....

Re: Finally, progress....

Thanks, the plank bolt holes in the hull brackets were all ready figure 8 shaped (10 of 12 anyway) from the PO  I'm not real sure why, they used 3/16" bolts, which seem fairly small. For coverage the new are 5/16".

I made a slightly larger hole basically in the center, and I'll use 2 washers topside under the bolt heads. 3 if you count the really thin plastic shim washer under the other 2.

Got the 4 seats that came w/ the Jet taken apart & the metal parts cleaned, pedestals & hinges, now drying in the sun. Hinges won't get paint, the pedestals will. The vinyl seems to be cleaning up pretty good, so later, I'll go grab some dye & see how best to prep them for dying:D

If I could only get work to fund more stay-cations, I might make some real progress.

Like fishing, a bad day wrenching on a project (esp a boat) is often still way better then a good day at work;)

No truer words ever spoken.

Sounds like you're making real good progress, wish you could find your camera!! My brain needs pictures (I'm from the comic book generation!).

Re: Finally, progress....

you just hit why i'm looking forward to the 4th! i'd rather have a 3 day weekend, but this will be a nice solid boat work day since no pressure to go out of town.

JB, yer moving right along there. but isn't it time to revise that sig line( beautiful, seaworthy, elegant, common, socially accepted, politically correct, much easier to get chicks in, nicer)? i check CL daily and i don't see many of those kind of glassers, cept for "common".... also not sure how glass is PC....it's cuz they make surfboards out of glass but military aircraft out of riveted aluminum? ;)

Like the Tinny commander @ the Starmada, oops, as unofficial defender-in-chief, said it somewhere & it struck me as funny at the time. So it is really in his honor that I have left it, now that my boathouse is divided.:D I did have to edit it a bit. My sig line is verbose, so w/ the pix of my buddy, I had to make room to include the tinny, the 'Tron & the ply and still pay tribute to oops:cool:

Re: Finally, progress....

Well, didn't get to the motor, but did manage to get another section between 2 ribs 70% bedliner free. After about 530pm, most of the hull is again in the shade. I also re-treated this morning's clingers, got some of them removed. I will probably end up getting the whole hull to the 70-75% mark & run over to the shop & hit it all again w/ the big beast pressure washer & rotary head. Then see where we stand on another round w/ the stripper, or skip ahead to the wire wheel & grinder.

The seat bench/planks:

The seats pulled apart & drying:

The ugly:

The 70% mark:

Yep, gotta quit the day job.

Even w/ 2.5+ hrs running a weedeater, and the burning sting of the worst stripper ever. Still a better day then working:)

Now that I see those pictures, I sympathize even more with you on the bedliner. I'm tired out just looking at it! See what I mean? Seats are looking good too.

No joke, I'd just assume deal with expanding foam than try to scrape that stuff out, yikes! Looks like about as much fun as a sharp stick in the eye:(

The sharp stick in the eye was a less then health blend of sweat & stripper, not good. After noticing how much 'stuff' I got done yesterday, my honey do list is longer today:(

And unless I can swap for an extra day off next week, I've lost 1 of my stay-cation days this weekend. Got to do some site visits before Mon & Sat or Sun are the only days available. So gotta make the best of the 4 days off between now & Fri 7/6:)

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

I have started my own personal collection of modern art:
IMAG0537.jpg

Not much going on w/ the Jet today, but I did prep & rust reform the pedestals. Depending on how the am goes, maybe bedliner removal pre 930a, then the final wash/scrub @ the seats, let 'em air dry & wipe 'em down w/ mineral spirits, then we DYE 'em tan. And round out the day w/ the final bulk bedliner removal just before dinner.

Then Sat we blast the bedliner clingers & revise the removal plan depending on results.

Have a good Thurs pm & Fri am....................

Ok, 1st a message from Fire Marshall Bill:

This stripper is nasty stuff. For emphasis let me say that again: This stripper is nasty stuff:(! I have the chemical burn to prove it:mad: We'll come back to this in a bit.....

I did get another round of bedliner out Friday am, 2 more rib sections down. That left me w/ the 4 areas @ the knee braces under the splashwell (that is proving to be so much less fun then the rest of this picnic) and the 1 section immediately in front of the splashwell.

I got the seat pedestals painted & all the seats dyed and put back together:D:
Before
Uglyoldfadedseats.jpg

Then you take a couple of these:
Seatplanks.jpg

And after you dye 'em w/ Rustoleum Vinyl & Fabric paint (AutoZone price matched ZoroTools.com so 4 cans for less then the price of 2.5) and set them on the seat planks you get something that looks like this:

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

Re: Top secret metal boat files are all hidden!

After I got the seats sprayed & trying to stay ahead of the storms they had predicted for Fri pm, and most of Sat & Sun, I revisited bedliner removal at about 630pm. Got about 50% of either side 'well' (area beyond outer 2 knees under splashwell) stripped. Either dedication to purpose, or to use up the last of the bedliner, it is thicker here then anywhere else. So that will require a couple applications of the stripper. As per usual while using this nasty nasty stuff, I removed my outer layer of gloves before I stood up & got out of the boat.

Here's where it got tricky. I always wear a couple of layers of gloves to help keep the stripper from getting to me thru the gloves. Apparently as I removed the outer layer of gloves, my left hand came into contact w/ my right forearm just above the wrist. I always leave the extra gloves on during wrap up & cleanup of the mess this stripper leaves behind. Not the gooey piles of bedliner mixed with stripper, that's done w/ best gloves I've got. Not usually more the 3 or 4 minutes. Then I come in & rinse my exterior layer of gloves, remove the remaining layers of gloves & wash my hands, forearms & face thoroughly before removing everything I have on & rinsing it thoroughly in the laundry sink. NO STRIPPER in the newish washing machine thank you very much.

I still needed to move the seat parts & pieces inside, they've now had time to cure & set and are ready to be handled. So I bring everything inside & start to notice a slight burning on my forearm.

Yep, when I did the whole rinse me & the clothes off, apparently a small 1/2 the size of a dime spot of skin didn't get rinsed well enough or had significantly more stripper on it then normally. Since bedliner is somewhat rubber, still kind of is once the stripper starts chewing on it, it also tends to fling small little flecks of happiness all over the place while stripping. So I try to be extremely cautious when working with it, and cover myself well, but man, this is serious business and you have to be judicious & very diligent about your health & safety when using Aircraft stripper by Rustoleum:
RLL-255447.jpg

But nothing else I tried even came close to working 1/2 as good.

The Admiral has mandated 1st right of refusal for further stripper usage today until the burn has been inspected by the ships doctor:facepalm: Crew is on standby til then.........

Have a great weekend fella's! Work safe & watch for crazies if you boat over the next 7days:)

Heck, if you use any means of fuel driven transport, watch for crazies:D

A good message, worth repeating. When I was using stripper, I rinsed everything off outside using the hose, it sure does a job on the skin, can't imagine if you got it in your eyes. I always wore wrap-around safety goggles.

Those seats look great, the color of the dye is a perfect match for your boards.

Good luck on the rest of the bedliner & congrats on the persistence to get it all off. That's the kind of thing that would try my patience to the limit - gee I've been working on that for over 30 years . Made a little progress maybe.

Looking forward to seeing the next steps once the removal is all done!

I actually considered a flip up full face shield the last time I was at HD & saw them hanging on an endcap. Respirator & wrap@ safety glasses every time! The outer gloves have long 'sleeves' more kitchen dish glove like then normal rubber gloves, that's how I know it was from the other glove when I took them off. And yeah, I always (and thought I had) do a very good job cleaning up my work area, me, my tools & whatever I had on. It just got by me, despite my efforts. It was also the 1st usage of the 2nd gallon of stripper:eek: So you'd think by now I might have both a clue & a process for using it & cleaning up after it.

I really like the coverage & the color of the vinyl dye, hope it is moderately durable:
248918_AU_11oz_FabricVinyl_GlsBlk_L.jpg

It took some time to clean & prep the seats, but none of that was hard. The dye laid down great, covered fairly well, dried to the touch quickly, and ready to handled & re-assembled fairly quick even in WAY over humidity conditions. And for about $20, it did 4 seats. Admittedly, they were tan to begin with, but some had faded to almost white. White to blue seats or vice versa might require more attention.

Strangely enough, took the big deaf galoot to help w/ my patience/tolerance stuff. Been at least 30yrs, the Admiral will tell you I have not yet completed that journey:facepalm:.

I can't tell you how tired I am of seeing black bedliner up close & all bubbly from the stripper.

We're all looking forward to a clean hull around these parts.

I'd like to hear the long term durability of that dye. I was thinking about going that route on some seats for the Islander, chickened out in the end.

Re: Starcraft I own, but haven't picked up.........

an Internet search found a car site that had mixed reviews, all love It or hate It. no real middle ground. So we'll see. for $20 they look great, and when I get to It, they get new 'custom' vinyl. but for now their good

Re: Starcraft I own, but haven't picked up.........

Set the seats all out in the full sun all day today & they all seem to have taken the dye really well w/ mostly even coverage:facepalm: But they look better & fairly nice so I'm satisfied. We'll see after they've seen some seat time:D

I have gotten about 95% of the hull down to just the clingers on. The areas around the knee braces has been challenging.

I may take some time off from the scrapping & stripping on Sun and read through the original motor service manual again. I need to get a handle on getting it fully prepped and finish giving all the internal wiring & motor a good once over, then give it a test fire this coming week.

I'll drag it to the shop on Mon & after work hit it w/ the pressure washer, then revisit the clingers. It has been a test, for sure.

I checked the transom w/ a 3/16" bit today. Although it looks like PT, it's wood shavings don't, and are all bone dry, even after a hell of a rain storm last night.

Based on the hull holding water from the storm since all the limber holes are plugged, there look to be no leaks, even post stripper.

Hope all have had a good weekend so far.
