That hull is rough man, wow!

I haven't used it yet, but I wonder if Marine Tex might be a good route to go on that?

I should know more once all paint/primer is removed hopefully only tiny pitted holes....WILL not discard this boat period. Either marine tex or PC - 11. I need to research on pros & cons. 4-lbs PC-11 marine grade can be bought for $50.

Glad to see you aren't throwing in the towel. MG. Since you have no leaks she still has a lot of life and fun left in her. I'm lighting a candle at the Altar of Tin for ya, buddy. Good luck finding the right goop. I'm not familiar with PC-11 but the price sounds good.

Re: Starcraft Jupiter 1960 16 ft

I used something called lab metal I got at fastenal . It's supposed to be made for aluminum boats. It's held for a year. I thinned some of mine a bit too much, and it dried way too fast. I started with a bit on some old aluminum, and couldn't beat it off with a hammer after it dried. Etching primer and then marine epoxy which has to be painted over will also seal it. I have heard good things about marine tex, but never used it, and haven't even heard about PC-11. Good luck.

Yikes! If anyone ever needed proof as to why you NEVER use pressure treated lumber in/on/around a tinny, this is it. I wonder if you could apply several thin coats of Marine Tex, or JB over it by allowing each skim coat to cure before applying the the next. You could then sand, prime and paint. Just a guess. Keep us posted on the progress. I'm curious to see what you come up with.

Re: Starcraft Jupiter 1960 16 ft

I would not attempt to skin the ENTIRE friggin' hull with something. I just don't think it will work well. Since it's not leaking I'd just treat it as a cosmetic issue (I mean seriously, what else are you gonna do?) and go with a high build primer.

Re: Starcraft Jupiter 1960 16 ft

good point. if it doesn't leak, flex too much, or feel weak it "should" be ok with a good primer/paint job, and it's not in a spot where it's going to be seen. I doubt the rough texture would cause any noticeable drag, or decreased performance either. thankfully, these old boats seemed to use much thicker aluminum that can handle that much pitting as opposed to more modern aluminum boats, which seem to have more of a tin can consistency. keep us posted.

Mr g...

Sorry to hear about the pitting... quite familiar with it!!! ez is correct here. It would also cost a small fortune to jb weld it. I made the mistake/good decision to poke at some of the deeper pits and well... ended up with a bunch of holes. Might want to double check the hull inside the boat for any tell tale white oxidized mounds. That's where you will most likely have trouble.

Hope that helps!!!

millions of pits....

Almost everything about this boat works and look good except for the bottom of hull....
JB weld? May have to spread out JB on entire bottom....is there better way to do this?

DSCF6122.jpg

I was talking to someone at Jamestown about filling the pinholes. He suggested to brush on Gluvit. I read many threads that say the opposite...I am getting more confused:confused: Should I spray ZC first then fill with either filler?

I am deaf, I don't give up easily! I will see that the boat splash one day!

Cheers,
MG

I'm with ez, I think building up your primer coats might be about your best bet here.

That's some serious pitting, personally I don't think I'd put a lot of time or money into it.

That's what you'd be doing if you tried to coat it with JB Weld, and if you wanted it smooth, you'd be sanding it for the rest of your life! That stuff does sand, but dries hard as a rock and takes forever to sand down.

Definitely not Gluvit on the outside. It wouldn't last.

Since it's on the bottom, I'd just paint it and forget about it. Clean the aluminum best you can, ZC primer then some high build primer, then paint. It's best to stick with the same brand of high build primer and paint.

Built boat dolly....

Making room in the garage. Somewhat wide, place 4X4 Cedar underneath...works good!

agree on the high build primer + bottom epoxy+don't worry about the pits but be sure you have a good working bilge pump

love the boat dolly! i had to build something like that for my FIAT....piano dollies from HF at corners.

Gulvit task completed, Mixed & pasted the JB-Weld on some deep gash. Used air tool orbit sander with 60 grits.
Much easier than hand sanding.

Re: Starcraft Jupiter 1960 16 ft

This Jup sat on the water for a long time at popular Lake Delton/Wis Dells.... I suspected the electrodes eroded the hull....Once this boat being restored, if it gives me at least 5 years...I'd be happy. This boat with rare three knee braces, I'd not want to give up this boat.
