Keep up all the good work. I'll be back working on my boat in another week after vacation. I've already forgotten about all the joint pain and am raring to get at it again.

PS. I missed all the discussion regarding quantity of teeth. I've gone to football games and hit the bar nearby the stadium for a quick drink. When I walked out of stab town and asked my friend what he thought of the place he said "You could count the teeth in that place on one hand"

Well you know the toothbrush was invented here where i live. if it were invented anywhere else it would be the teethbrush...

This thread (along with a lot of the other Starcraft restos) has been a great inspiration to me to get started on a Sylvan project.
The boat is coming along great...can't wait to see more pics.

Well, despite my back still bothering me, i got a few small things accomplished today.

i bolted the steering bracket back to the transom and treated it to some new ss bolts (previously they were steel and it took a few hours and some pb blaster to get them off.

I got the adhesive sanded off the dash

and i got the old woring ripped out and started working on some of the new.

Andy, I replaced my dash "board" with one of those PVC trim boards from Lowes. It was inexpensive, looks great, will never rot, and is super easy to cut holes in for gauges, switches and things.

Just getting vinyl. my order should be in tomorrow so hopefully it will stop raining long enough to get it done!

At first I was going to replace the wood and have it similar to north beach. but, like kev i am on a budget, every little bit counts. the wood is in good shape so im sticking with it. im putting vinyl on the dash, and its not costing me any more... the vinyl i need for the side panels is 3 yards, and there will be scrap big enough to do the dash.

ya ive been taking it easy... but my personality prohibits it. i am not the kind of person that can just sit and watch tv. i have to be busy doing something.

Sounds good. Mine was rotted when I got it. I originally replaced it with plywood but it wasn't a good quality piece and didn't look that great so I did it again with the PVC board.

The vinyl is going to be grey... the whole interior is going to be grey, because the seats that came in it were newer and in good shape, and grey. so grey seats, floor and vinyl.

the dash is going to be stock, no gauges for now. when i can afford some i will add them. the only addition is going to be a 4 gang switch panel...



so today i didn't really work on anything except for hitting the trim pieces for the side panels with some steel wool. not perfect, but better than before. my vinyl is coming tomorrow and i think my wife is actually going to help me out with them! im also waiting for my order with my reg lettering and switch panel. i also ordered some led low profile lights for the trailer, on clearance from northern tool for $19!!!


now a few questions:

adhering the vinyl to the panels... staples, spray glue or both? i notice that the staples always rust... do they make aluminum staples?

the top trim piece for the panels, was originally held on with nails. what kind should i use?

the little cubbyhole behind the panels still have some liquid nails that someone used to reapply the original vinyl... what will take it off? don't say wire wheel... that would be like condemning me to hell...

Don't know about aluminum, but I do know that Home Depot and Lowes have stainless staples that will work.

Side panel nails Aluminum or stainless.


Hmmmmmmmmmm removing liquid nails from aluminum unfortunately Andy I am afraid the easiest rout is going to condemn you wire wheel .

I'd use spray adhesive and stainless staples for the vinyl. The stainless staples unfortunately are annoyingly pricey. When you get a couple bucks invest in a tach before any other gauges. It will help you get your motor trimmed and propped correctly. Plus it has the added benefit of letting you know your charging circuit is working (since it works off the alternator pulses). And in case you haven't heard my rant before....don't put a speedometer in. They don't work well, are a pain to install, and require a bunch of friggin' holes in your nice water tight hull.

That sounds like some good advice from an old starcraft vet. I didn't know that a tach is such a handy device.

So you'd recommend a GPS for speed I assume?

what about if i got some "goof off" on the liquid nails and let it sit for a bit... think it would soften it enough to scrape it off, then hit whats left with a wire brush??

ya, i really have no interest in a speedo... once i know my baseline mph, im good. really dont care after that. a tach is def the first gauge thats going in.

i guess what it really comes down to is do you always need to know how fast you are going??? me personally, i dont. i'd like to get an idea of top speed when first splashing the boat, but after that it really doesnt matter. so i'll just grab the tom tom out of the car and take it out when needed. personally i wouldnt spend any money on any type, even the paddlewheel add ons for fish finders. now if i were to get one free that would be a different story.
