Hope they don't make you get 2 more estimates. Be sure to take it to a MORE expensive shop if they do...

i'm afraid the estimates you'll need to find are for sales of similar boats....i think that first one is not too far off for what it would take a shop to fix all that damage, and there's no way the ins co won't total it. altho as Bob suggested, once you and adjuster agree on a figure, then ask how much less if you kept the "salvage"

wonder if there are iBoats members who have enough "documentable" expertise that their opinion would carry some value? someone who's worked at or been a dealer, maybe? failing that, maybe those of us who have actually sold restored SCs could get you some info that dad could use to prove the actual fair mkt value of the boat in the upper Midwest?

Re: Starcraft Rear-Ended

I had some dumb girl take off the front of a motorcycle I paid $1500 for (it was parked), she tried to run but her car had a flat front tire from my bike...

Anyways I expected $800, but they noted that they checked for a bike like mine and offered me $2500 to total the bike and take it away, $1800 to keep the bike.

Long story short, I kept the bike and fixed with junkyard parts... entire new front end... :)

Get an idea of the shape, and type of boat you have, and get prices.

I think 10k if they decide it's a loss, if not... looking at about 5-8k for the engine + the damage to the most importan part of a boat, the transom area...

Could argue damage to the transom, + the support.... 8-10k I think... ;)

Re: Starcraft Rear-Ended

Dad settled with the insurance company. They offered 5k + let him keep the boat, which he thought was fair and accepted. He will probably buy a different boat with the cash as he doesn't have the patience to fix it right and would rather go fishing than work on boats. He said I could have the boat if I want it. I am in the middle of fixing up a 16'er and wish this would have all happened a month ago. I'll probably finish and sell the 16 and then fix up this 18'er to keep as it is newer and bigger if the hull looks ok when I tear the floor out and inspect it. I think the motor will probably be ok if I can fix the hyd tilt, maybe will need a lower unit worse case.

Good that he got something fair for all the troubles. For a minute there I thought you might keep the 16 and the 18! MBS spreads as you know --- really, easily!! :)

Keep us posted on your progress of fixing the 18 .... that should be interesting!

Sounds like Dads happy, you too.

Don't know the rules in your state, would the boat, trailer and motor now have salvage titles? I know some states don't require titles on motors or boats.

Noone was hurt, cash-in-pocket and MBS!

If word gets around, a new scam could go viral...glasser owners towing their rotten rigs around in mall parking lots
