Re: Starcraft Supersport The Project Begins

Hi Bob,

Looks like a nice project. I?ve made slow, almost non-existent progress with my 15 foot 1964 Starcraft since the Gluvit, what with out-of-town weddings, funerals, holidays etc. My plywood was ?? with lots of very wet and gas-soaked foam underneath. After removal and thorough repeated scrubbing, the smell is almost gone.

I?ll be following this to watch your fun and progress!

Yup.... just going to clean the carpet glue residue off it and then seal it up.

The tough part of cutting is already done so I will drill the rivets out and pull the sheets. I am going to re-foam under the deck and install aluminum plates to support the seat pedestals I have.

If the existing ply is good, I'd forget the 1/4" exterior ply. It will only add weight. Besides, if your going to cut ply to fit, then I'd probably just opt for a single layer of maybe 5/8" instead if you want a thicker sole in the boat.
I used 5/8" in my 74 SS, plus one under layer of glass mat and resin, and three top layers of glass and resin. The thing should out live all of us. I dd the same with the transom, two pieces of 3/4" ply, epoxied together with one layer of glass cloth in between, then I coated the entire transom panel and added two layers of mat to the front side before installing. It made for a tight fit but it made it. The way I see it it will help a lot if I add a larger V4 as well. I don't have any 85 hp motors here, so something's getting new decals. Besides, back in the day, they didn't plan on a V4 with power tilt and trim which adds some weight back there.

There's no problem with any of us. Its our wives that have the problems!

I'm gonna second that, only because while deconstructing mine it had 2 layers, and i noticed that there was water trapped between the 2 sheets. even if you seal both sides of both sheets, if water somehow gets in it aint comin out...

Re: Starcraft Supersport The Project Begins

Nice catch Bob! Looks like you got a great project boat with a little less work required than most from the look of her(good for you since you are so busy).

What year is the hull? Looks like a fine specimen of SS you've got your hands on, have fun with the project.:D

How thick are the aluminum plates you're going to use for the seat mounts?

It will be nice to see one of the experts show us all how it's done:p

...yes we expect great things from you Bob:)

do you have a particular order you have to make your stops in? if you were in saranac you could come by my place before going to plattsburgh, that would *kinda* be on the way, if you went a certain way.

Re: Starcraft Supersport The Project Begins

Re: Starcraft Supersport The Project Begins

Well I have it off the trailer and flipped over. Just yesterday I finally picked up a can of gluvit upstate NY.

Since it is upside down I have been working on the hosclaw trailer. I just did new wheels, wheel bearings, seals and I am starting on a coat of paint next. I even got new lights and a few new rollers.

Sadly my job does not afford me the time and lately I have been getting ready for winter here.

I am sincerely undecided on color too. I have been doing some sanding on the hull and replacing rivets. I picked up a can of zinc chromate but the weather has not cooperated with my schedule. I just might leave it flipped over for the entire winter.

I am very happy with how solid the trailer is. I made a mistake ...... I was starting too prime the trailer with a rattle can then I discovered it was not primer (I really should wear my glasses more ;) )but a can of ford gray. The color has grown on me and I think that is the color I will use for the trailer.

I am also planning on side bunks. Since the trailer is stripped (W/O boat) I will probably weld on some angle iron and design the side bunks.

This is a really start from scratch project. The hull has nothing at all..... no lights, steering, wiring, seats so it is a blank slate. Even the trailer has nothing..... not even a winch.

In the earlier picture there was a piece of plastic mounted to the transom. I thought it was some sort of repair and removed it. I expected the worse and only found about 25 drilled holes from various sensors ???? I basically pop riveted the holes and I will move on.

The rear plywood plate is very sound.... I sanded it and coated it with epoxy.

Yes there is progress but slow.

Bob when you get time we need pictures :D you know we like pictures even if theres nothing major goin on Heck you shoulda seen all the fanfare when I got mine back on the trailer LOL. I havent been able to do anything since with monsoon season being here ( in Louisville  ) . I may end up finishing mine up in the garage over the winter at the rate things are going.

That's about where I am and I'd say we're pretty close in latitude with winter coming. Funny how this fixer-upper transformed into a "replace & paint everything"! I'm stalled at the moment, but ordering supplies gives the illusion of progress!:D:D The thread about no one posting restoration costs caused me to tally my expenses to date...big mistake!!;)
