Wow!! Lots of great info!!

Bob - thanks for the great post. Never have enough information!! When I get the motor I will change to a 16:1 ratio. Do you have pics of your collection? I'm thinking I will start to look for some old small outboards. :D Do you fire them up from time to time?

Skippy - Now that's a lot of info. Thank you. However, my Scottie is a 481, 3.6 hp. :) I also need the black center "decals" for the gas on/off knob and the choke knob. Ya have to wonder where all those parts went to..... I will spend some time looking at the links you provided. I will update on my progress. It's awesome getting this motor and resurrecting it. 62 years old and still running with very little, if any, maintenance over the last 25 years. I believe it helps that it was stored inside. ;)

I feel the addiction starting already....

Here's a shot my son took of our 3 Johnson 5 horse TD20's running on a stand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n99FZIqruXQ

I'm sure a lot of guys here are sick of me posting this cause it's been on pretty often. The motor on the right is one my Grandfather bought new in 1946. The other 2 are freebies I picked up because one of the AOMCI guys suggested I get a parts motor. But I don't have the heart to part out runners. :)

I'm still working on pictures of the Mercs. They're all green tank models.

Cool video Bob.... :) I think you kept the mosquitoes away for a while. Do you ever run them on a boat?

On occasion, more if I had time. They don't smoke (or seem to) near as much running on a boat. :)

Wow! SA talk!

Well...here's my story. My dad bought a 1947 Scott Atwater 7.5 HP new. Back in those days, if you wanted to go fishing in a rented boat you'd better have your own motor. If you found anyone renting a motor, you'd be lucky to get back to the dock without rowing.

So; my Dad bought the SA. And then eventually he bought his own boat too...a Cadillac aluminum boat made in Cadillac Michigan. It made quite a pair. The SA would make that boat fly; especially with just me in it. Dad always said that the Scotts were more powerful motors than the similarly rated Evinrudes or Johnsons...and I had no reason to doubt him :)

Our motor was a Model 473...and there is is up there in my avatar photo. I wish I still had it. My folks sold it in the 60's to a couple of young guys for I think $12.00. And; when demo'd for them...it started on the first pull. Damn. $12.00

Oh well.

Hey...are there any other model 473 owners on here? I'd love to grab the tiller of one of those again....just let me know where you live and I'll show up on your door-step! Seriously!

Chuck

Thanks Bob...I have placed ads there before; it's a great resource.

And; I certainly would buy a Scott-Atwater 473 if I could find a decent one at a fair price.

But; what I meant was: if I could find someone who owned one...I would love to join up with them for a run on a local lake.....It would be great to hear the sound of one of them again....

Agreed Chuck.

One of the many things that attract me to these old motors is their uniqueness. The look, the sound. The memories are icing on the cake. All the new stuff is just so generic. Ones no different from the next. They could all be made from one company and just change the stickers.

Re: Started the 1948 Scott-Atwater!!

I had no idea there were so many Scottie lovers.... :D

I am really anxious to get that '481 in New York and bring it home. Skippy - I checked out the repair manuals link you provided. Awesome. That should help tremendously when I start to work on it. You think I should go ahead and replace the coil and points? And about that impeller, I saw someone mention a "wobbler" type in the S/A's. Is that in mine? Easy to find and replace?

Can't wait to hook it on my Sea King and give it a run. I'll be sure to record it.

Thanks for the awesome info Skip!! Wow!! You're a wealth of information. You really did your homework when you acquired your Scottie. :) Can't wait to get it home and start working on it. When you describe the coil "rebuild" I think I have heard of that. I do know coils have a hardened clearish liquid/adhesive insulator material on them and are wrapped in some type of paper. I'll have to check that out.
