if the valve would not seat, could it be because your flapper was not working and over time this led to the valve sticking and water getting in?
kind of a weird one!

Maybe, not sure if a valve not seating would cause water to get in?

the sticking valve is just the result of water getting past the flapper.
flapper being the issue, and the things that happend since.

Re: Starter grenaded!!

Okay, I'll try a leakdown test. can I use the compression gauge if I modify it? Is it fine to preform the leakdown test with the exhaust manifolds off, or does it not matter?

In the future if you ever want to pressurize the combustion chamber and don't have a leak down tester with the two gauges. Try taking a spark plug and break the porcelain out of it and braze a standard hose quick release air tool fitting on the end of the plug opposite the threaded side. Use a standard air compressor and the regulator on it to apply air. Its the same set up you use when replacing valve stem seals without pulling the head. In this case you not concerned with what pressure's it will hold just looking where the pressure (or lack of) is going.
If you put it back together even after you found nothing you can use this method still---just to confirm.

Re: Starter grenaded!!

Still wondering if I should use some silicone along with the gaskets for my risers. i know with the Mercruiser gaskets it says no sealant is needed. the gaskets I've got are GLM

So is it ok to put sealant around the exhaust on my risers kinda like how you put some around the water jackets on the intake manifold?

I understand what your saying. the rust wiped away, and I didn't spend too much on gaskets and having the heads magnafluxed. So I'm in the process of putting it back together and hoping for the best! If in fact I do have to pull the engine........well i guess I'll cross that bridge when i get to it. Maybe it would be cheaper to look for a new engine? hopefully I won't have to!!
