Starter question

I just ordered a new replacement starter from a local auto parts supply store, They wanted the # off of the starter so it would be the right one. They said that there was a difference being that it was for a marine engine, but they didn't really know what the difference was.
Is there a difference? What is it and why are they different?
The starter is for a 2.3 L omc.
Also when I get an ignition tune up kit for my distributor, is it a special marine kit or can I just buy the standard kit for an 1989 2.3L engine from any auto parts store?

Re: Starter question

Marine starters are sealed to prevent sparks from igniting any gas fumes that may be in the bilge.
Get a marine starter, not an automotive starter. Your family will be a lot safer.

Re: Starter question

Wow! that was quick, I was just editing my post and you answered while I was doing that.
Thanks

They did say that they would make sure it was for marine use. They are a store that can get just about anything for any motor.

Re: Starter question

I've taken apart a few marine Ford and Gm small block starters , There is NO difference internally...'cept the ford has a 'hose' type clamp that holds the cover for the electromagnet to bendix linkage.

It's one of those things they get a rating for so they can charge more.. Some have a clear red varnish type paint on the internals...but only some.

Re: Starter question

Got my starter today, Haven't blown myself up yet!;). They said that it was a marine starter and it does have the little hose clamp thingy around it holding the cover to bendix linkage. Is the purpose of the clamp just to hold the cover and gasket tight to the starter?? Or what??

Re: Starter question

The marine starter should have a brass contact disc that the electro magnet contacts to both make the starter electrical connection and extend the bendix gear but I have seen starter sold as marine with steel discs. Other than that...

Oh yeah, the stock ford starter doesn't have the band to hold the cover on.

Thanks for the back up, Pirate

And as far as the Darwin award comment in post #4, I'm just asking questions to learn, and get shot down:confused:

BTW jtybt, thanks for the info.
