starter toast? 470

Well, fresh oil, gear lube, new carb, replaced broken valve spring, resurfaced exhaust manifold. Finally got it back together, turned the key, and I got maybe one sickly rotation. Boo. Then some clicking and grinding. Pulled the plugs, same thing. Engine spins by hand. Cleaned all connections. Haven't done all the electrical tests (I have a reluctant wife/helper), but I'm leaning towards the starter. Realistically, how long should it take to remove it, taking into account 25+ tests of corrosion? Any tricks?

So, first & easiest step is crank it on jumper cables.
Next is clean up your wiring ends, including the battery terminals and all the starter circuit connections. You'd be smart to do this anyway.
I use emery cloth on the ends and a wire brush on the threaded studs. If the ends have a lot of greenish white buildup you can clean em with a slurry of baking soda with water, just keep the bicarb out of the battery acid. Then wipe em down. Oh and ps. changing the starter is proof of your toughness and resilience. On some motors it is hard to do, but if necessary it's worth the effort.

There are two solenoids for the 470.
Run a jumper from battery (+)to the small term. (+) on solenoid on the starter. If all is well it should turn over. If it wont click, solenoid is bad. The starter solenoid on a 88 470 is mounted low on the block on the starboard side of the motor. Its hard to see, its behind the hoses and wires. Have someone turn the key and see if it clicks. (Not your wife cus she's still pissed you bought a 470!)If it works test the large post for power when the key is turned all the way on (start). If you have to replace block solenoid it can be a real bear to get the bolts back in. I used electric tape to line my socket jamming the bolt in to keep from falling out. You might need someone to push the hoses out of the way with a 2x2 or something. Put an old shirt or something under where you working to catch the parts your gonna drop. Should take about 15 minutes to change a starter if you can get at it. Make sure main motor ground is good. Marine parts only. If you don't have a 12 volt test light (Probe) get one your gonna need it.
Clean all connectors and use liquid neoprene to seal out water. Have fun.

Don't think its the solenoid because he is getting some turn and clicking at the starter. My experience is solenoids just go bad not get weak. My 470 starter acted like this a while back I removed it took it apart and cleaned and lubed it thoroughly and now its fine. Btw the 470 starter is pretty easy to get to, just the rear bracket can be a little bit of a pain but nothing to complicated

Re: starter toast? 470

Well, like I said, I had already cleaned the connections. No great way to test the battery, but I had 13.0v, I tried using it with a jump box, and it was able to lift the outdrive without a problem. should be enough juice to turn over the engine a couple of times with the plugs out. I got 12v to the main solenoid when cranking, so I think that means either starter or main solenoid shot. So I was able to remove the starter without too much trouble, minimal cursing and no busted knuckles. Removed the heat exchanger, which wasn't a big deal since the system was empty anyway. Don't know if it would have been possible with the exchanger in there, but definitely easier with it out. All in all took me 1-1.5 hours. I think I'll go with a gear reduction starter. I'm going to get this starter tested anyway-if it tests good then I guess I'll know to expect more trouble after the install...

It is, but just barely:rolleyes:. PMGR starter is a wise choice:D.

i really hope i'm not hyjacking :(but thats' a great pic to go by ,... the starter for my 470 does'nt have the 2 selonoids . only 1 bolted to the block . the pinion gear is winding out and getting stuck . i took it apart and put 12+v on the copper terminal . it climbs up the worm gear and stays there . but i have to tap it down w/ a hammer to get it down . its catching something as if it were getting caught on metal , NOT STICKING . can i take the armature out and get the cover off ? it looks like a circlip holding it on but the ends look rusty and broke , meaning theres no holes for squeazing the clip plyers . i'd have to use a flathead screwdriver to pry it out . or do i just spend the money and replace it ? any thoughts ,...???,.......:D
