Starter won't shut off on 75 Evinrude 70 HP

I tried starting my 70 HP Evinrude after it sat for a year. It was slow cranking, wouldn't start, and then lo and behold, despite turning the key off, it kept cranking (slowly). I sprayed WD into the key, but that didn't work. I am using (new) deep cycle batteries with a 1 or 2, 1 and 2 battery switch. Why is it so slow cranking? Did I fry something? Tell me it ain't so. This boat has been a money pit. Next time I'm buying new.

second hand can be good once you get the wrinkles ironed out..

First thing.. it sounds like either your ingition switch is faulty, or your starter soleniod,, I'm leaning towards the later.

don't leave it turning over for long, it will fry the starter.

find the starter, then follow the big lead from that to your soleniod..

if you have a multimeter, see if positive power is going to the small wire that comes from the control panel to the soleniod, do that test with the ignition off.
If it is getting power, then the problem lies in your ignition switch..

If it isn't getting power, use the resistance measurement of your multmeter across the two big terminals on the soleniod, (disconnect one of the big leads first.)
do that with the ignition off as well.. if you get a reading, then the soleniod is faulty, without power, that soleniod should be a completely open circuit.

taking your slow cranking into account also, I'm pretty sure your problem is the soleniod.. give it a tap with a small hammer and try again. its possible that the big switch inside is dirty and stuck.. but really your only option is to replace it as they are usually sealed units.

shouldn't be expensive, I got one cheap from an outboard wrecker when mine died.

regards

Frank

I second that, it's most likely the solenoid.

I give my igniton switch a quick shot of WD-40 every spring... This has helped to keep corrosion off the internal contacts of the switch... In the case you describe it could be any one of many things, but I'd also be inclided to also start with the soleniod too... Check the starter bolts too (possibly poor ground causing the slow performance), but the continued running most probably the ignition switch or the soleniod...

It was a sticky solenoid, I tapped it and it's back to normal as far as it only tries to start when the key is on. I was wrong about my batteries, they are starting batteries, not deep cycle. However, the motor is still slow cranking. I think I need to try a new solenoid. Is it true that old motors have dried out seals that will go bad easily? Thanks a million to all that replied. I'll keep trying to get the old girl running.

Richard Simpson

The biggest cause of sticking solenoids is low voltage source. (low/bad batteries, cables and connections). Be sure you have a good voltage reading on the live side of the solenoid while cranking. Check with a voltmeter while cranking. If you have less than 9.5V, better look for battery or cables/connections. This is probably why she cranks slow. Rectify the voltage problem before cranking further......

This is a dangerous condition, so check it thoroughly. A stuck solenoid can cause electrical fires... :)
