Re: Starter won't shut off on 75 Evinrude 70 HP
second hand can be good once you get the wrinkles ironed out..

First thing.. it sounds like either your ingition switch is faulty, or your starter soleniod,, I'm leaning towards the later.

don't leave it turning over for long, it will fry the starter.

find the starter, then follow the big lead from that to your soleniod..

if you have a multimeter, see if positive power is going to the small wire that comes from the control panel to the soleniod, do that test with the ignition off.
If it is getting power, then the problem lies in your ignition switch..

If it isn't getting power, use the resistance measurement of your multmeter across the two big terminals on the soleniod, (disconnect one of the big leads first.)
do that with the ignition off as well.. if you get a reading, then the soleniod is faulty, without power, that soleniod should be a completely open circuit.

taking your slow cranking into account also, I'm pretty sure your problem is the soleniod.. give it a tap with a small hammer and try again. its possible that the big switch inside is dirty and stuck.. but really your only option is to replace it as they are usually sealed units.

shouldn't be expensive, I got one cheap from an outboard wrecker when mine died.

regards

Frank
