While you are at it disconnect the battery cables at the battery and at the motor, clean and reconnect. Often they look good but looks don't let the juice flow.

flywheel is good and tight .

is it OK to run motor with choke in manual position ?? I can pump ball up tight with choke in manual position and it will usualy start on first crank then -- if it is ok then I wou't need to take motor cover off and reistall each time
bob

Sounds like the starter bendix is giving up, may need a new one, how are the teeth on the starter drive and is it engauging all the way?

Re: starter won't stay engaged

Check the underside of the flywheel teeth. If they have been worn away at an upward angle due to a faulty bendix drive (starter gear), the flywheel will require replacing along with the bendix drive. If the flywheel is not damaged, I'd suggest replacing the bendix gear.

The above is assuming that the starter, cables, connections, and the battery are in top condition.

Hello
It sounds like you covered just about everything, good battery, good connections, new bendix, do you think ignition switch may be dropping out start curcuit, dont know where else to look. Foot on flywheel while cranking? That must be interesting.

rthalls....it's possible that the brushes in the starter need replaced and the commutator clean/polished. Every thing in there is may be just worn out or dirty. This makes for poor contact between brush and commutator. Same as a bad connection on the battery. Don't pass the amps. Brushes are still available for the starter.

Re: starter won't stay engaged

I just saw your comment about choke setting. Is this motor slow starting ? It sounds like it as you comment that a manual choke setting makes it start and run right away. If you have dirt in carb jets, it maybe has to cranck for a longer period, trying to start, which will make the bendix jump out as it is designed to.

Your problem is another then:

Either you do not hold the key in choke position, counting to eight, before crancking,

Or you will need a total dissasembly, blow out with compressed air in all passages, and install rebuild kit operation of carb, as your motor is running lean due to carbureator being dirty or obstructed by old leftover gas.

Remember running a 2 stroke lean means higher combustion temperature and less oil, which will harm your motor fast or during time.

I forgot:

These 2 cylinders usually starts after 1/2 - 1 seconds of crancking. When pull started 2 pulls average.

I'm with OBJ. Sounds like the starter. You've obviously ruled everything else out. Just because you had it rebuilt doesn't mean it's right. I'd take it back to whoever rebuilt it. It may be in such bad shape that you needed a new one.

Re: starter won't stay engaged

just had a so called perfessional who spent four hours on this motor - he also took the starter and had it gone through with no luck , still drops out . battery was also checked out along with compression - spark and so on and all were good .he said he gives and and gives me his perfessional bill !!!
have a quistion -- after the starter engages the fly wheel don't the flywheel hold the bendix there untill it starts ?? then going faster lets the bendix drop down , if so then on the compession turn [ just after ] this is realeasing the bendix gear .. still need help bob

That would be the correct sequence.

Re: starter won't stay engaged

From what I can tell you say it starts fine when you manually choke it? If so maybe you have an electric choke problem. Ive seen motors that try to start and kick the bendix out and then immediately die. It happens over and over and it seems like the starter is messed up but its really the motor trying to start and cant because of not enough choke.
