I have a mercuriser 888 1976, can anyone please tell me why my starter keeps going out. I have put two new starters in, and the gear on the end will not go back in. Does it need to have a ground wire on the starter, I was told that you don't ground the starter with a wire, would this be true or not.
Thank you for your help.

Are you saying the you turn the key to start the motor, the starter starts the motor and the starter keeps spinning and will not de-energize?

It is just dead does nothing

Don't see the starter going out. The Ford 888 has a different wiring system but the basics are simple. The key turns to start which applies power to the yellow wire. The yellow wire energizes the starter solenoid at which applies power to the starter

So you turn the key and it does nothing. What are the voltages at the solenoid and starter?

The starter doesn't DIS-engage is what your saying? You turn the key & it just keeps cranking even if engine is running. What you have heard about a ground wire is true but not to the starter. The starter is grounded thru the mounting to the engine block. If you look at the diagram AD offered it shows the solenoid is grounded externally.
