Skargo and Chris are not allowed to reply to each other. Some of us just don't mix. Have you ever made your own salad dressing? Kind of like oil and wa . . . no, come to think of it, more like water and water, or would that be oil and oil. Great, now I've started an oil thread . . . hmmmmmm . . . :)

No problem and no muck intended. I just like when people ask questions they get solid advice from people with experience. That goes with boat fixing and maintenance too. I see many who tell people stuff, when they haven't the first inkling. ;)

Best of luck with whatever venture(s) you decide on. Working for yourself is the best, if you do it right!

And if you really want to make some good money/ROI let me know and I'll tell you what I do. Let's just say this is the PERFECT time to make a killing without using much, if any up front capital.

This isn't a comparison and I wasn't picking some fight, someone else did!

Op, I mentioned the pawn shop because there is more variables in how you can make positive capital. Consignments are fine, but they are limited. You can consign items out of a pawn shop also if you choose to. I was simply giving you another option to put your eyes on and just maybe a bank with there loan would see more value in a business with more options on making money from day one. Of coarse everyone else here has FAR more knowledge so feel free to disregard. Ohh, by the way, feel free to pm me if you have any questions..

Do a very detailed business plan before you do anything. It will make sure you have researched/thought through every aspect of the business. Your banker will make his/her judgement upon how well you seem to understand the business.

After that, the rest is just following the plan...

That is certainly one of the best pieces of advice. I've been surprised at the number of self proclaimed experts telling people that the business plan is just for obtaining startup capitol. That couldn't be farther from the truth. You use the business plan to measure your success or failure and adjust accordingly.

Re: starting a business

I started a retail computer shop that turned into a repair shop immediately, then into a computer training company and then expanded into a network service company. Make a plan and then adjust accordingly. If I would have stuck with my original plan of only a retail store it would have died in 6 months. Keeping flexible made the future sale of the company very profitable. Nonetheless, I learned:

Join a business group (Chamber of Commerce)
Sell something (service or product) with a high profit margin
Pay yourself first
Have plenty of initial capital to hold you until the biz kicks in (you have to eat and pay bills). I appreciate the guys that tell you they started with nothing, but that not quite true for the vast majority.
No vacations. No time off. No fishing...sorry

I know with us it was a huge expense to get into our line of work do to all the tools and equipment required.
Yes you need everything, but try and buy it one at a time after a job. pay cash if you can and try to buy used in good condition.
