Starting Engine Runs At Full Throttle

This is our first boat, it's a little Glaspar Sportster and has a 90hp Evinrude on the back, I think it's a 74.

When I bought the boat the owner ran the motor for me and it sounded fine, no oil leaks that I could find and everything was clean and well tended. He said the engine was rebuilt 2 years ago and runs great.

In our attempt to get everything ready to hit the lake, we wanted to start the engine to get familiar with it, I can start it but it runs at full throttle and doesn't idle. Before anyone asks the throttle is in the idle position :), so I pulled off the cover and the carb intakes look like they are fully open. I can see where the throttle lever pushes them further open but they aren't even touching that, they are WIDE open.

So what did I do wrong? and how do I set them back to closed so I can start the boat and idle it, I'm pretty handy with engines and things but outboards are a new animal and I couldn't figure out how the intakes opened so far.

Thanks

did you disconnect the cable at the engine? and try to move the linkage manually? could be misadjusted cable, or broken cable. if not the link and sinc is way out of whack.

I didn't and the reason is that I could actually watch it move and it's not the problem, I saw some other threads about screws getting caught in the butterfly's, I'm going to take off the filter and have a look.

I can see the whole linkage, what I can't figure out is how the buttefly's got pushed so far open.....

I'll head out in a bit and pop the filter off and take a look...

Thanks

Re: Starting Engine Runs At Full Throttle

I finally got some time to look at the boat tonight, I removed the air cover and lo and behold there was a bolt in the lower throttle body, it was keeping the butterflies open. Now here's the odd thing, when we bought the boat we had the owner start it and it ran fine, but that bolt looks like it's been in there for a while actually (you can see where it's worn down). And I can't figure out how it even got in there in the first place, but while I was doing that I noticed there is no air filter. There are two vents to let air in from inside the case, are there filters for these Evinrude's or at least something to stop large items (like bolts) from getting into the intake??

I'll start it tomorrow night and make sure all is well, I'm thinking of taking it down the local boat shop and have them do a once over on the engine...

Thanks

It's not normal for outboards to have air filters. They don't normally operate on dusty roads!

Also I don't think there was a 90 Hp in 1974. The 90 hp appeared in 1981. Before then there was an 85 and a 100.

If you tell us the model number we can ID the model and year for you.

Then you'll find it worth looking at the parts diagrams on the brp website at
"http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e"

Come to that you can ID the engine from here
"http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/599222"
Copy and paste the URLs without the " marks

You'll notice a different numbering system started in 1980

Could be that the bolt was just sitting in the air box for awhile, and somehow got bumped from trailering or what not, landing it in the carb.

Stranger things have happened....

Yes, no, there's no air filter on outboard engines.

Re: Starting Engine Runs At Full Throttle

Where do I find the model number on the engine?

I found a little plaque that read:

393769
90 mx
M B J

Not sure what that means and I didn't see any other numbers on the engine, the outside states it's a 90hp Evinrude V4.

Nor am I ! The model (and serial) numbers are usually on a plate on the transom clamp bracket. Also you may be able to find them stamped on a core plug somewhere on the engine.

Post 1980 the model number will look something like E90MLCRD the E is for Evinrude as opposed to Johnson the 90 is the hp and the CR are the year letters , in this case 84.

Ok I found it...

E90MLCRD

Which according the online sources is:

84 Evinrude, 90HP, Manual Tilt, Electric Start, 20" Shaft

I'll go get a manual for it, I need to do a service check before I do any floating, so I'll have to read up on that.

The only off thing is this has a tilt motor, does that still mean it's a Manual Tilt?

Thanks for the tip Vic :)
