I'm a better shot with a rifle...

I did come VERY close to buying that paintball gernade.. I LOVE the idea... plus I play paintball every now and then and this would be and awesome addition since no one has one that I play with...

pepper spray is illegal in MA... but so are other things that are easy to get :)

Sorry the OP had to deal with the thieves stealing his gas but this thread has made very some very entertaining reading and is further evidence just how clever boaters seem to be. Guess I am going to have to start buying my gas now..........

I got it! I got it! Fill the can with E10 gasoline! That stuff is ruining engines nationwide!

Seriously, it's a fun discussion, but if you screw with a thief, especially a local who resents the vacationers in the first place, you have just put your boat, dock and cabin on the table. May as well call the fire department now.

If you do anything that causes injury you will likely pay for it (in addition to the above consideration). Even a pepper spray trap that causes the guy to trip and fall overboard will set you up for an uninsured loss. Don't even think about anything deadly; you can't use deadly force to protect only property.

Consider, too, that your traps will catch anyone--the curious 11 year old who is not stealing gas, someone out of gas in an emergency (yes it happens often--your tank is empty and there's a $20 bill, or a can of gas shows up a week later. Some parts of the country it's fairly standard.)

Kill his motor and you have problem #1. I like the heavy oil mix idea best for that reason--not to be a wus about it, but to make your point without increasing risk to you and your stuff. If you fry someone's motor, you will never be able to trust your own gas tanks again--and they have more time and opportunity than you do.

A farmer was tired of someone stealing his watermelons so he put up a sign :"one of these watermelons has been poisoned and only I know which one." He didn't poison any of them, though. He came back the next day to find someone wrote on the sign "Now, there's two."

I recall a guy back at college who didnt want anyone eating his food if he left his tray there for a minute so he left a litttle note on the tray saying "I spit on this"...He came back to find another note on his tray saying "I did too" lol Maybe the best thing would be just to drain your gas out into several safety cans and take it with you. They cant steal gas from an empty tank. Maybe plan your next trip to burn most of it out and then there wont be much for you to drain.

28 grams of CHINA WOOD OIL mixed with 1 gallon of gas will lower the octane of the fuel by 12 points causing detonation AND will severely carbon foul and bind the piston rings causing siezure. This info was sourced from Department of Defense research and testing on enemy vehicle sabotage.;)

If you are doing the camera, then I would suggest finding some kid to help you set it up to stream to the internet. And put a camera in a few boats.

Forget about trying to prove it, just have the evidence up on youtube for everyone in the community to see.

But I'm still leaning towards fixing the gas so it seizes the motor.

Re: Stealing My Gas!!!

So this is my experience with gas theft and how it ended up. We had 2 boats moored at a lot, a large sloop, and a little skiff. We were taking the sloop out in the middle of the night (tide constraints) and our leaving woke up the couple across the canal (former cop+former coastie). They proceeded to watch someone take the gas can(6 gallon outboard tank) out of our skiff and leave in another boat. Neighbors call the cops. Now we're chugging down the canal oblivious to all this, but going slow. The thief is now stuck behind us, no way to get around. So the cops get them, take them in, and decide there is insufficient evidence to pursue. More likely they didn't pursue since they were minors and everything gets wiped when they turn 18 anyways and really what would happen for petty theft-a slap on the wrist? So cops-great but avoid calling the lazy ones. Personally, i like the pepper spray idea.

Im sure they are stealing the gas at night. to get a good picture, you will need a flash which will alert them to the picture. they will then get paranoid and try to steal the camera. You can always get a night vision version, but they would be pricey. I think the old jedi mind trick where you leave a note that says we are watching you would be sufficient.
A guy at the university use to just wrap his chain around the bike rack, he said that as long as it looked locked they wouldn't mess with it.
These guys are after an easy target. just make it a little difficult and they will go after someone else.

Re: Stealing My Gas!!!

yea.. cops can be hit or miss, I'm friends with a few of them around here so I think if there's even the slightest bit of evidence, they'll help me 'right' it... even if it just means they constantly pull them over when they see them driving just to make their life wonderful.

Bottom line... once I get em, I'm going to have to go off my gut on how to handle it... I'll have my ghillie suit ready, and cop buddy on speed dial...

it'll all depended on the mood I'm in when it happens.

the first step is the camera... from there, it all depends on the weather (or should I say 'WHETHER' or not I'm in a bad mood or not...

Re: Stealing My Gas!!!

Here's the fix;

Buy a camera, find out who it is.

Put marked fuel in your tank (you know, the red stuff reserved for farmers not paying taxes on their fuel).

Report the guy to the government for using tax-free fuel when he's not a farmer.

Let the government and the IRS deal with him!!

haha

How about one of those infrared trail cameras? Take his picture. Hunt him down. Show him the errors of his ways. (just make sure theres no witnesses)

Up here its fine to run marked fuel in a boat. I suspect it is the same in the US. As long as the vehicle is not being run on the highway system, you can run marked fuel. Several stations here sell it either for boats (in the summer) or snowmobiles (in the winter).

This is where putting it up on youtube or something is better. No violence and they may never know who posted it. But they won't like having the evidence posted for all in the community to see.
