Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

Ill add something to this, for the force 85hp that has the plastic houseing not the cast aluminum. Be very very very carefull when reinstalling the foot due to if you twist it a little bit then crack pop you have just broke the houseing, I know from expirence I just got done breaking 3 housings, now on my 4th one that I had epoxied back together and will hope not to break this one!!

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

I ran through a sand bar the other day and it ate my impeller up! Got home found a repair shop about 15 miles from the house that had my impeller in stock. I got their and I was thinking this cant be it. There was a old broken Mercury sign in the window, a few bullet holes in the windows as well. I step inside and see wall to wall boats, they were packed in this shop to the point I dont know how they will get them out! They obviously had plenty of work to do. I went to the counter where I found a old man, this old man had the shakes, he couldnt write very well, he was the only one working in this shop. I showed him my impeller and he knew exactly what part I needed (went from Sierra to Quicksilver) and knew exactly where it was in his cluttered shop. He had a magnifying glass and was looking at my old impeller, looked up and asked how long I spent in the sand! He charged my $19 and some change, other shops I had tried before this one could order me one, they wanted anywhere from $30 to $40, for a aftermarket Sierra! Good people like this are a dieing breed, today when I call or go in most marine shops and mention Force they look at me like I have leprosy or something. I know where I will be going for any parts I might need in the future.

Just wanted to say Thanks for the step by step thread, this is the second time using it with no issues, flawless!

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

I know this post is a little old, but VERY HELPFUL. Pulled the lower unit off and the water pump apart in all of 15 minutes. Water pump was worn, but not terrible, so I decided to order a new thermostat as well. I will have less than 35 minutes in the whole project.

I have an issue> i have a 1989 force 125, when the muffs are on water will come out the pee hole lightly, but when muffs are off and lower unit submerged to the water intake ports in a tank, no water at idle or reved up, then side of engine is too hot to touch and starts running rough, why wont the water pump pick up the sanding water in the tank, it only works with the muffs and possative flow from the hose...

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

Frank's instructions were spot on for my 1969 105hp chrysler with one exception. instead of a hidden bolt above the exhaust casting, the bolt for the exhaust itself is very long and is the 7th bolt for holding the lower section on.

took me all of 10 minutes to disassemble. i have not put it back together yet as i wanted to verify conflicting info from the internets on which impeller i actually needed.

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

I am going to change the impeller on my Force 85HP and in my Seloc it says to -Lower the water-pump housing down the Driveshaft
-With a clockwise twisting motion of the driveshaft push the pump housing in place

The step by step Frank noted say the following:
"Lubricate the pump housing with dish soap and push it down over the impeller with a counter-clockwise twisting motion. "

To be clear, the Solec wants you to twist the the Drive shaft clockwise where Frank is noting to just twist the housing counter clockwise.. when you get the impeller in I guess it does not mater but if you have to align the housing to secure it you dont want to turn the opposite direction it sounds (Clockwise) as it will mess up the impeller and the way it is to bend for proper working?

Sorry for being dim-witted but any clarification would help..

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

I am having difficulty in re-installing the water tube on my Force 50. Should it slide in automatically to the power head? I did not see any washer or seal at the top of the tube when I dropped the lower unit to change the impeller. Any help appreciated

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

Excellent insructions. I just took apart my lower unit on my 85hp force 88 and chenged my impeller, wow it was distroyed. The guy who owned the boat before me did nothing. Problem now is the engine wont start, turns over but no go. I have spark but do you think it's not enough spark because i did overheat the engine to the point were it shut down in the water. I burn't the thermo switch and replaced it. Also i think I screwed up my neu/ford/rev because the propeller is trying to turn while I'm in neutral. How can I fix that problem. Also any pointers on starting the engine.
Thanks Craig

From my limited knowledge...You have not adjusted the shift rod properly. Turn the connecting nut that connects the shift rod from the engine to the lower unit one way or the other until you have the proper prop movement. Eg. When the shift lever is in neutral it should spin freely, when the shift is in forward the prop should lock in and the same for reverse . This could also be the reason your engine is not starting as the neutral interlock thinks you are in gear. Good luck

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

Here is a question, I am trying to change the impeller on my 87 Force 85HP. No problems getting it apart... Have the new kit and now I cant get the old housing off the shaft. There is a flare towards the top of the shaft that looks like it is part of the shaft???? The rubber and Teflon gasket in the housing seems to be too small to get it over it. I am guessing it might come off or do I just try and force it off (Which seems to be silly)??? The new housing also has the same set up and looks like it will not fit down over the shaft "flare" Nothing about it in the SOLEC I have.. Any Ideas? Help??

Thanks
Scott

Sorry for the bad pic, my cell phone sucks

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

My fiance loves to tell me: "all of the words are important" when I read stuff... and after this morning, I can not deny this!

The instructions (which I printed and took downstairs with me) clearly point out that the collar and seal will more than likely fall out, and if not... some jiggling will make them come out. I apparently skipped that part.

Pulled my lower unit off this morning and had a part fall out that looked incredibly similar to yours, Scott. I had no idea where it came from, and just fiddled around with it. Where it went... not where it goes!

In looking at diagrams that is appears to be the crankshaft spline seal. The other part that fell out of mine was apparently the seal.

Guess I'm gonna go remove the lower unit again. I'm trying really hard to go pro with this whole impeller changing business. lol.

Next time I'll read the instructions THOROUGHLY first, and then start the work.

For the record I have an 89 Force.

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

p.s. I seem to get water dumping out of the mounting bolt locations. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

I believe the water tube has not been installed correctly and water is dumping into the leg vs. the engine

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

Ok, I'm a little confused on this for my little 50hp.

Do I need to be in forward, first of all?
Is there a cotter pin and how do I access it?

I tried lowering lower unit while in neutral and it would only go down a
little bit, then it would 'engage into gear' and not go any further.
I know I'm missing something, but what is it?

Thanks, by the way because other than my own ignorance, this is a very
helpful thread!

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

There are several steps in the process. Yes there is a pin held in by a tiny cotter pin that connects the shift rod when you separate the lower unit from the leg. In order to get more space to access this point you have to remove the upper casing that surrounds the upper leg of the engine . My Force 50 had six screws to remove the case. This then gave access to the upper part of the shift rod which has an adjusting attachment. If you turn this it will extend the overall length of the shift rod giving you additional access to the lower section. At this point you can remove the cotter pin and pin and the lower unit should separate. Try making sure the water tube stays in place and does not drop out with the lower unit. Mine did and it was difficult to re-insert into the power head. When re-assembling you will have to adjust the shift rod so that the prop spins freely in neutral but is engaged in forward and reverse. Also putting the engine in forward or reverse (not sure which) also can extend the overall shift rod length giving some additional access at the lower unit.
