Hey guys, just wondering how many of you have transom remote for your head unit? Anyone have pics they can share? I am looking to install one of these for my new unit...Just installed a Kenwood KMR 440U and I like the idea of the remote...
Thanks!

Re: Stereo transom remote

I have a Clarion system in mine with a remote on the swim step and another at the helm. Because mine came factory with the rectangular remotes that were custom made for Chaparral, every time one goes bad, its another $200 to get it replaced. If your using the aftermarket round ones (Jensen and clarion) and your drilling your own mounting holes, then you should be OK as long as they keep making them in the same size.

Typically, the swim step remotes are good for a fwe years until water finally gets into them and they go kablooie.

from a cool perspective, I love being able to crank up a good tune from the water.

They also make a wireless remote that someone being towed can control the tunes, assuming they can hear them. I've seen these on a friends boat that has the big speakers hanging off his wakeboard tower.

Re: Stereo transom remote

I just bought the same Kenwood deck to replace a Clarion CMD5. The Kenwood transom remote has to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen so i do not have plans on mounting that on the boat. Hopefully they will make another one with better looks and better control for the deck.

I have one mounted near the platform and one at the helm. Use both frequently, with no issues so far. Here is a photo showing the one near the stern. Can't find a good photo of the one at the helm. FYI - OEM / Dealer installed when I bought the boat new.

I have one on my boat. Not exactly on the transom, but on the aft portion of the flybridge, accessible from the cockpit sole. No issues what so ever. Works great.

Re: Stereo transom remote

Don't have one on my boat as I don't really need it since the radio is at the helm and we're trollers so someone is always there. Uncle just bought a Mastercraft with remotes in 2 places and he said it's awesome. Have friends that ski with their boats a ton and anchor out at the islands alot and they can't say enough good things about them- way better than having an expensive stereo exposed or having people track water and sand more than they already do just to turn the volume up or down.

I have a remote at the helm and a remote on the transom on our Alpine system. Honestly, if I had it to do over again I would have skipped the transom remote and just used the keyfob remote when out of the cockpit.

You have to have a radio that is made to accept a wired remote. There will be an open 7-9 pin plug connector on the back of the radio or a pigtail for the remote. Get the remote that is made by the same company as the head unit. Then it's simply cut the hole and run the wire to the unit and plug it in.

Fireman-sounds simple enough! My head unit is "remote ready" if you will, I just have to buy it...
Thanks!

Re: Stereo transom remote

I finally purchased my remote! BUT now I have to figure out how to wire this thing...For those of you that have done this, can you help me with the wiring? I figured there would just be the one simple wire that plugs into the back of the stereo unit, however there are 4 wires on this sucker! I don't know how to post the wiring diagram that I found but I will try to relay the info and maybe someone can help guide me in the right direction. Here is the link to pdf file... http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchf.../113RC60MR.PDF

The diagram says:
Wire #1 (Blue/yellow)-plug straight into the back of the stereo unit -this is the one I know what to do with!
Wire #2 (red) ignition wire- ACC at fuse box to ignition key
Wire #3 (orange) Illumination control wire - to fuse box - to illumination control switch
Wire #4 (black) Ground wire - to negative ground point of the vessel (Do I have a negative point at the helm I can wire this to?)

Re: Stereo transom remote

#2 is your switched power. How are you running the head unit? Do you have it coming on only when the key is turned? If so, then connect this wire to any accessory/switched power source just as a trigger. If you have the head unit able to stay on even when the key is turned off, then you'll need to connect this wire to the trigger wire from the deck which will be a blue with white stripe wire.

#3 is optional.. when 12V+ is applied to this wire, it will dim the lights on the display panel. You don't have to hook this up if you don't want to.

#4 is any solid battery ground source. You should have many of those up at the helm or running all over the place. Just splice in with a nylon crimp connector.

Re: Stereo transom remote

Mark, thanks for the reply. I have the head unit set up so that I can turn it on whether the ignition is on or not. If I run the red wire from the remote back to the head unit as you suggested, can I run wire #3 to the same place so that the remote would illuminate anytime the head unit is turned on?

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Stereo transom remote

No.. listen.. :)

#3 wire.. the orange/white wire.. that is optional and not required for operation. All that will do is dim the panel when you apply 12V+ to it. This is commonly tied into your nav light switch so that at night when your running lights are on, the panel dims. You don't need to hook it up if you don't want to.

#2 red wire.. this is going to be the wire of "concern" here since this is the trigger wire to turn on the remote. Since you have the stereo wired to be on independent of the ignition, you're going to have to use the trigger wire from the deck in order to turn that remote panel off and on. Normally, that would be connected to your switched ignition power.. but in this case, that won't work.

Coming out of your head unit, there is a blue wire with a white stripe. This is the 12V+ trigger wire that activates when the deck is turned on. Typically, you connect this wire to any external amplifiers/etc as the trigger that the deck is on which in turn triggers the accessory. Make sense?

So, if you would like that panel to be in sync with the deck and turn on and off only when the deck turns on and off, this is the wire that you're going to have to use to power it. Typically, this is not used as a source of high current.. but in this case you should be fine being as that the remote draws a very minute amount of power.

Haha yes I got it now! Thanks for clarifying. That makes total sense to me now. I've installed amps before so I know what you are talking about now.

I will get this done this weekend and report back!
