Re: stern yanked off air

the FCC has decency guidelines for both radio and
TV. everytime these laws are broken, they levy a
fine against the station(s). the guy in Fla. who
was fired was cited by the FCC and clear channel
was fined $75,000, after which they had a conference
call with all DJ's/stations explaining a new zero
tolerence policy. of course howard broke the rules
in no time, and this is why his show was dropped.
he was in breach of contract since his contract
with them allows termination on these grounds.
I think they are just trying to upgrade their
image by dropping the guys who constantly push
the envelope... not so much censorship, but more
a business decision IMO.

"indecency" (whatever that is)

It's alot like morality....or being a gentleman, chivalry, consideration, thoughtfullness, selflessness, citizenship, compassion, and other guidelines, observed by many, that make society function.

I will not miss that jerk for a second.
What worries me is the creeping advance of censorship. By now there is not only commercial pressure to censure, there are these religious or otherwise motivated groups who think that they can tell me what to see or hear and they get away with it!!This used to be the land of the free,if we let these censors get away with this, it will be the land of the conformed where a very few huge conglomerates will feed you the news and entertainment they see fit for you.
There was a country in Europe in the 1930s that did this and very soon it was too late to prevent the disaster this caused..

well fellas, it's not like he's gone forever. i believe he was pulled from 6 whole channels. wow. i listened to him this morning. he's not going anywhere, unless it's his terms. he has said he plans to retire when his current contract is up anyway.

it's funny, though. in a way, he fought for what i hear around this site all the time- freedom of speech, freedom from regulation, freedom from big government. i hear these complaints all the time on this site. yet most responders to this thread seem happy with what happened.

What this is about is a business decision. I am sure there are plenty of people who enjoy the opportunity to hear a live sex act on the radio everyday. Most don't. If Howards ratings and market penetration were such that advertisers would be willing to pay enough money to cover the added expense, and provide a long or short term benefit to the company, he would still be on everywhere.

In reality Howards sticht is getting old and tired. "TODAY LESBIANS WHO DON'T EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER ENTERTAIN OUR AUDIENCE WITH THEIR PASSION AND SOME OF HOWARDS FAVORITE TOYS." 10 years of this crap and even the most impotent of men get bored.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean we all get our own radio programs to spew the most base form of "humor"(?). It isn't censorship when a company pulls a couple of stations from transmitting someones speech. Nobody is stopping anyone from speaking in any way. Freedom of speech is a right, freedom to be heard isn't.

not a freedom of speech issue at all, it's a
business decision pure and simple. FCC did NOT
fine howard for his comments, nor did they take
him off the air, clear comm. just decided they
didn't want to carry his show on 6 stations.
most likely because of advertising revenue.

Re: stern yanked off air

Howard's crap went out with me when I got out of junior high school. I have zero interest in listening to him.
And since they are public airwaves, with licenses granted by the government, there must be at some level some standards.
It does trouble me at times that the decisions on what is and isn't allowed, and level of fines, seems to be a bit arbitrary and capricious, but I am not exactly sure what to do about it.

And I don't really care whether Howard is on or off the air, personally, but all things being equal, more choice is better than less choice, so I would tend to be on the side to leave him alone and let those that wish to listen to his program.

Clear Channel did not want to be scolded by the legislators plain and simple and suffer any more fines or risk getting their license pulled. The head of Clear Channel took action in advance because he was involved in the Congressional Hearings for Broadcast Decency. So he indefinitely suspending Howard Stern and fired Bubba the Love Sponge. Wise biz decision? with 7,000,000 listeners they will soon find out.

We can think for ourselves. We should make up our own minds about indecency on the air, and act accordingly.

Choice is freedom.

Re: stern yanked off air

I think what bothers me the most about this is having our government dictate our morals be it good or bad. The FCC is behind this. And, if they can make a ruling or set decency standards such as this that involve our freedom of speech, then you can certainly plan on the other side of the coin. Whats to say that Christian radio programs wouldn't be pulled/banned eventually because they do not represent the morals and ethics for all. Its a dangerous road to go down. Like I said, CHOICE is freedom.

Clear Cannel would have been better served fighting for the rights of free expression than to turn tail and run. They are the largest broadcasting network and have power.

I will concur, that if they start here and then it's a no holds barred thing for sure.
Take a bunch get up on their high horses and say that the preaching on radio and TV is bad and something will be done there also.
Where will it stop?

Just look at Jim and Tammy Faye, what a group that was.
The only reason they stayed on the air as long as they did, she helped keep the cosmetic companies in business and head them pulling for her. :p
Now come on, if you need that much make-up to be presentable, you don't need to be on TV anyway. :D

If I hear "Turn the Channel" one more time....

What about kids?? Preteens??

They are not going to change the channel. They probably look for it.

If I keep it out of my house what happens when my pretten goes to a friends house and that kind of TV watching goes on??

I dont care how well you raise your kids. Kids are still kids.

Re: stern yanked off air

BF, I understand however, this stuff is out there and they can find worse on the internet than on TV and radio.

Again, its a matter of choice. I was furious over the Janet Jackson deal because when I tuned in to the Super Bowl I thought I knew what to expect and was shocked, it was intentional and I didn't have a choice, I assumed it was safe viewing for the six year old watching it with us. Other TV shows depicting adult content are advertised as such, you know it ahead of time and you can choose to watch or not watch. Most of them are on late at night or you can choose to censor your child's TV watching through controls.

The radio IS a little different in that respect, but do kids listen to talk shows? Mine never did, she was too in to her music.

I know its a matter of choice and kids will choose to watch this filth.

So the turn the channel arguement is bull$h1t in my opinion.

I am so tired of hearing that. When in my home my kids are not allowed on the internet unless strictly supervised. The same goes for TV. But as soon as they walk out the door that is all moot.

It is a choice for an adults but not children. They are not responsible enough to make sound decisions yet. That is why the law considers them minors.

Re: stern yanked off air

well, all i can say is that my parents raised me to understand what is right and wrong. i think i turned out just fine.

i am trying to raise my child the same way. i'll give 100% and try to educate her properly. if i'm still worried about what she'll hear on the radio on the way to school, i did something wrong.

there are plenty of other things in this world to be worried about.

If you think your kid isnt watching or listening to what they are not allowed to at home while they are not home you are ignorant.

Of course there are other things in life to worry about but to use that as an excuse to not worry about these issues is a shame and lets me know that your house is one of those I would rather my daughter not visit. ;)

Mattt, you are 100% correct, and so is BF.
There is no way to stop kids from listening to this crap--banning it just makes it all the more interesting and apealing--So you better fight it with information and discussion--because none of the other choices are even possible or will work.
