Water pump, replace no questions asked.

Pull the head on that 30 psi cylinder and check the condition of the gasket and the cylinder walls, it could be simple or complicated. May have nothing to do with rings.

What hp is the 1977 powerhead? If it's a 115 it isn't the same as a 1978 115.

Not hard at all, all motors are different, 6 bolts to remove from the lower unit, shifter disconnected either under the carb or in behind an access plate and the whole lower unit drops out. The pump sits on the top of the lower unit , made up of an impeller, housing and plate. You will either need a kit or just an impeller which can be around $30-$70 for the impeller or kit. The whole process will probably take an hour and a half or so depending on how easily it all comes apart. Learn how to do it and then you can do all your friends motors too, you become an instant outboard mechanic celeb, trust me.

If you are trying to swap powerheads, Dhadley will advise you.

Impeller for sure. Did you just start to crank it to check compression ??? straight off ??

Yes.. I Checked Comp On Top Left 75psi, Bottom Left 101psi, Top Right 30 Psi, Bottom Right 95 Psi. After Test I Tilted Motor Up And Poured About A 25 Oil 75 Diesel Mix In Cylinders To Try To Loosen Things Up . Rotated Engine Over Several Times And Checked Comp Again , Increased Very Little. Thinking About Pulling Te Head Off And Also Replacing The Jets , Mabye It Was A Combo Of Problems Like Water Pump And Running To Lean , I,m Not Shur Do Not Know This Fellow I Bought The Motor From

mabye, cheched comp after using a 25 oil 75 diesel mix and rotating engine and comp did not change very much

by leg ...do you mean the gear case/ foot??? if so the answer would be yes if they are the same length. I think they changed them in 79.
pull heads and look at piston condition, get heads resurfaced and replace head gaskets if pistons look ok, then check compression again. then get a spark gap tester and test the spark on each wire, and a new set of the correct plugs, change oil in the gearcase, replace all fuel lines even if they look ok. new water pump impeller, soak and clean carbs and install a rebuild kit in each,

Are you interested in just swapping the powerhead or actually fixing the motor that has low compression, the post has split into can I fix it to can I swap it? You are getting into way more work trying to swap powerheads than simply pulling a head off to look. It may just be a head gasket which is a $20 part and an hour of your time and you may end up with 2 motors. If you have a complete motor that need a gearcase then swap the gearcase from the old motor to the new one.

Choice is yours, just trying to get an idea of what you want to do.

The 78 gearcase wont fit on a 77 model as the linkage is totally different do to the 78 is a mechanical shift and the 77 is hydo-assisted...shift rod is different, shifting length is different, linkage on block is different...:(

$3500 to fix , what was their diagnosis to come up with that kind of money?? Sounds like it's a shop that swaps out powerheads with supposed "rebuilt ones" without actually figuring out what's wrong. Wish I had that crystal ball, i'd fix the Canadian Government.

It sounds like they didn't diagnose anything as you are asking the typical hasn't been diagnosed questions or maybe they did. Just saw FB's post, no swapping out the gearcases. What to do????

:)

ok that really sucks..... so i do have the gearcase / foot from the 77 motor i bought and the same place told me that they cant rebuild a siezed foot. would it mabye be less expensive toput new pistons and rings in the 78 or rebuild the foot on the 77
