Re: Sticky rings??

u need another head. that head is junk if u try to fix it it will only decrease compressoin becuase u have to get all them dings out of there because if not they will hold cardon and make hotspots in the head and your new pistions will look like your old 1ns in no time

Re: Sticky rings??

Yea i figured that. I will be on the hunt for a used one. was told they don't make new anymore.

Got the stud out of the exhaust housing. had to drill it out and that thing was suppose to just come out with the block. see it's a tapered hole and the crud worked it's way down and just froze it in-place.

Re: Sticky rings??

Hey hotrod.....glad to see ya' got things underway. Those heads are still available. One side, port is around $170 and the starboard $168. I'd look for a good used one. Check ebay or post in the Thrifties Adds here on iboats. One will turn up....most of the time at half price of a new one.

If you are looking for heads, go to Screamandfly.com under parts and accessories, if none listed, call one of the guys listing V4 parts. Usually several used heads for sale. Hope this is not offending the owners of this board, I never wanted too, guess you are not looking for a set of new anyway, I wouldnt be.

Re: Sticky rings??

Machine shop has block. He was alittle concerned with the damage i did, But $ will fix anything in this case. Found the same 2 heads on ebay from the same seller above. I'll be taking them for 25$. that's what the last set went for. need to start going thru some of my nut and bolt bags and replacing some pretty rusty ones. Been doing my share of manual reading .Selco.. have clymer on the way... Looks like Im just waiting for the big day. Will start DAing the motor and get a fresh coat of paint for my nice new rebuid..

Re: Sticky rings??

OK im getting a tad nerved... on the installation of the rods on the crank.. the manual reads..

* center and align each of the connecting rod caps in turn using the Evinrude /Johnson Rod Cap Alignment Fixture # 396749 As Follows.

Huh? Im not sure my Wrench next dorr will know what this is.. he rebuilds auto engines,

will there be a big difference in the way theses rods go on the crank and in a different order?

Re: Sticky rings??

These rods were machined, and then broken into two. Every rod cap has to go on the rod where it belongs. There is a mark on one side to let you make sure you didnt turn the cap. If they were fittet wrong you can make a line rollers have to cross at high speed and it will damage them. I usually align caps as good as I can by the grinded 4 edges. Then check and check along when I apply torque. At last try with the lead tip of a pencil if there is external edge showing misalighment. If you accidently got caps mixed, you will usually be able to tell which belongs where by trial and error and feeling.

Nope didn't mix anything up, put them right back the way they came out bagged and tagged.

Is that what the Rod Cap Alignment Fixture is for. what is that?

Re: Sticky rings??

i had my heads redone on my 1989 110 in 2001 and i never had a problem.
now i'm rebuilding a 115 1990 and i'm just ready to put things back together and i'm heaving the heads done again. may be i will loose some compression bud i'm not looking for high compression just even. if i get 110psi on all 4 i will be a happy man.
of course it depands on the damage and yours did look pretty bad.
i would not spend 170 dollars if you can get it redone for 25 dollars.

good luck reeldutch

Re: Sticky rings??

hotrod007,
Those pics show MAJOR carbon/crud buildup on the heads. That stuff breaks off and causes rings to trip and score. I can't tell about the pistons but it also causes hot spots on the piston crowns which caused predetonation or finally holes in the crown. Get the mixture or temps right and decarb every few hundred hours to keep that crud away.

Re: Sticky rings??

The damage to the piston is classic coking. I would de-carb every 50 hours or better yet make sure the motor is capable of 5800-6000 rpm.

I bet it was about 5300 or so.

Dont worry about the alignment tool. You can do as good a job or better following G Dane's advise. And a lot easier too.

Dont forget there is also an "Up" to those rods as well. The oil hole in the small end should face up.

Re: Sticky rings??

Dont worry about that, as long as you get your motor fixed and running like a sewing machine.
