Is there any reason that I shouldn't store an outboard laying in it's side on wooden blocks? It's a 197? 70HP Johnson.

No reason not to. Stabilize the fuel, rin the motor a couple of minutes, fog the motor and then make sure the block is drained of any cooling water (leave it upright for several minutes).

No fluids in the motor so ya can store it upside down if ya want, but put fresh lube in the lower unit. Or drain it too. Leave a note on the motor if ya do.

Thing with storing a motor on its side is looks "wounded":D

Ya can store a motorcycle drained on its side too, but it just don't look right!!

Sounds like somebody needs another boat. Trust me MBS (multiple boat syndrome) is the best disease I have ever gotten. It is (hopefully) about to get worse.:D

I made that mistake once (storing a motor on it's side) mice made its way up into the engine and made their nest there to breed 1000's of little mice, I had to completely overhaul the motor and it never ran the same .....

Don't know what that is called in S. Africa, but without question, here in the 'States that is referred to as "Redneck Engineering"!!!

Re: storing an outboard motor

A rolling cart/stand would be nice to move it easily and it would take up less floor space. Found one for $200 from Garelick. Maybe i'll just modify an automotive engine stand. Guess I'll be checking out yard sales this weekend.

Re: storing an outboard motor

The Owner's Manual for one of my small outboards specifically warns against certain orientations when transporting or storing it. It has an external, remote gas tank so it's not about the gasoline tank. There is a small amount of gasoline in the carb bowl and lines and I suppose some residual oil and water to contend with. I've violated those warnings a few times but for the most part, I try to adhere to their recommendations as much as possible since I don't know what considerations went into those recommendations.

4 strokes must be set on one side only. Unless ya drain the oil, then anyway ya want

Thats lawyer speak for people that will pull a outboard, lay the thing in the back seat of the new Caddy, and sue the motor maker for ruining there new car. A motor drained can be stored anyway ya want. Look at this pic. I have 2 motors right now waiting on parts, and BOTH HAVE A 1/2 or better tank of gas in them yet. Both have internal tanks. Caps tight, vents closed, gas shut off...no problem for me..but do what ya must...
