Need some help. My 1996 150 Mariner has had a problem for the past 6 months. It seems like the engine is running fine. It cold started after a 3 month layup with just 2 cranks. The water pressure seems to be fine ... it's putting up a good bit of smoke and going through oil like it always has ... and it performs normally. My problem is that the alarm is sounding constantly when the engine runs. It's very quite and almost hard to detect when it's at idle. Then it increases as I turn up the throttle. It doesn't matter if I turn it up in gear or just revving the engine ... same result. When I turn the throttle back down the alarm slowly gets quieter again. Any ideas as to what's going on? Do ya'll think it's an alarm problem or an engine problem?

Re: STRANGE ALARM

When you say "constantly" Do you mean a constant beep? Or just a constant tone?

Re: STRANGE ALARM

It sounds like an electrical problem with the sensor. This could be caused by a ground problem within the charging system (Rectifiers). An increase in Amperage coming out would increase a background sound as would decreasing throttle. The same as in my old Chevy Impala. Does it hsppen with the CD player on?
Capt. R E

Like while accerating in a car.

It's a constant tone.

I was thinking that it was some kind of electrical problem too. I don't have a radio, so that's not it. What should I look into for a "grounding problem". Anyone know what I could do to troubleshoot this?

You can check for continuity on the overheat sensor wire.... But It might be better to just remove the sensor and inspect. The sensor wire runs from the sensor itself to a juction just above the rectifier somewhere.... It would be easy to replace also...
See if the alarm goes away after it is removed, if it does, that's the culprit...

On the starbord side of the engine you will find all the tan(alarm) wires connected in a block. While the horn is going off remove each wire one at a time to find out where your problem is. If it still goes off with all the tan wires disconnected then you probably have a bad horn. It's not that uncommon for a horn to be bad. DH
